Writing Audio Drama: Don't forget to shut the door

Before Shakespeare launches on his account of Henry V’s adventures in France, he has his Chorus address the throng of groundlings waiting in anticipation for the play to begin. ‘Piece out our imperfections with your thoughts…’, he begs of them, ‘Think, when we talk of horses, that you see them / Printing their proud hooves i’ th’ receiving earth…’ Veteran radio dramatist Neville Teller offers tips for authors new to writing audio drama on the Society of Authors UK blog. Publishers, authors concerned over Audible’s audio-to-text program

In the US, publishers, literary agents and authors have expressed concern that Audible’s proposed program Captions, which transcribes audio to text alongside its audiobooks, infringes on rights holders, reports Publishers Weekly.

In a statement, Audible said Captions ‘does not replicate or replace the print or ebook reading experience’, and is designed ‘primarily to fill an unmet need in education’ by allowing students listening to a book to engage more fully with the work. More. Extract from article in Books + Publishing

Have you received an offer of publication from a ‘contributory’ or ‘partnership’ publisher? The New Zealand Society of Authors is seeing an increasing number of ‘contributory’ or ‘partnership’ publisher offers.

Our sister organisation the Australian Society of Authors has posted an interview with their contract assessor, Olivia Lanchester, which discusses many of the issues raised by this type of offer. This is recommended reading for any writer who is approaching publishers or planning to.
Our last Literary Bulletin featured a blog post by Victoria Strauss of Writer Beware on vanity publishers. If you are approaching publishers and have not yet read this post, we recommend reading it.

I Don’t Want to Lose my Head | Lydia Cacho

I awake and glance about me without wanting to open my eyes properly. The clock says three in the morning. I reach up to my neck and rub it while taking deep breaths. Darkness invades my bedroom, my breath grows shorter. I have to put on the light in order to figure out my whereabouts, there’s an unfamiliar smell to this place. More

Your chance to win a copy of Moth Hour by Anne Kennedy

The family didn’t know what to do about grief. The noisy house went silent. I was fourteen. I lay on the red rug in the sitting room and listened to Beethoven’s Thirty-Three Variations on a Waltz by Anton Diabelli, op. 120 – over and over because it was there.

With thanks to AUP. Include your name and postal address in the email (the draw is only for NZSA members). The winner will be drawn at the end of next week!  Email us by 9 August to be in to win. Congratulations to last week's winners: Penelope Jackson, Sue Reidy.
