Even though the famous humpback whale Migaloo is all-white, he can still produce a rainbow of vibrant colors! Migaloo graces the cover of our next Beyond the Breach newsletter — coming soon! — so we thought we would share a little background on this unique whale. Pacific Whale Foundation was among the first to research Migaloo, starting soon after he was spotted off the East Coast of Australia in 1991 during a whale watch. Local aboriginal elders in Hervey Bay called him ‘white fella,’ which was loosely translated to Migaloo. He does not have albinism, as evidenced by his brown eyes instead of pink, and should instead be referred to as “hypo-pigmented,” describing a generic loss of skin color. He is estimated to be turning 30 years old this year and looking healthy and ready for winter mating season!

You can symbolically adopt the white whale Migaloo today as a way to support the ongoing research at Pacific Whale Foundation.
