The Downtown Programme will create a generous and welcoming destination along the water’s edge that is recognisably Tāmaki Makaurau.

This is one of Auckland’s biggest projects. By 2021, downtown will look dramatically different – a vibrant, transformed environment for all to enjoy.

Happy Friday from the Downtown Team!

Well it's August already (only 144 days until Christmas - you're welcome) and our construction team and traffic controllers have been out on that wind tunnel known as Quay Street working hard to ensure we stay on programme! It has been another busy week with the Quay Street Enhancement raingarden construction in full swing, Queens Wharf saw the arrival of another 100 tonne crane, and our Queen's to Marsden (Q2M) seawall team have been gearing up to start their very first pile just outside Captain Cook wharf today.

As always, look out for our pick of the week at the end of this newsletter.

What's happening?
  • Streetscape enhancement work along the southern (city) side of Quay Street.
  • Piling preparation works along the western side of Queens Wharf.
  • Maintenance works under Pier 2.
  • Seawall piling works commences along the northern (harbour) side of Quay Street (between Queens Wharf and Marsden Wharf).

Access to businesses and properties will be maintained at all times.

Important changes
From Monday 05 August, vehicle access into M Social will be via the Quay Street PWC service lane. To view map of new layout click here.

From Monday 05 August (first thing), access to the temporary Quay Street bus stop 1346 outside MSocial Hotel will change to be from the western side only.

Quay Street Enhancement

The construction of sixteen new raingardens along Quay Street is progressing well. The above images show two different raingardens. The first is being built in front of the PWC building. Tarps and Michael (pictured above) are using an air vac machine to carefully excavate around live services without damaging them. Thank you from the Downtown Team to all businesses showing such patience and cooperation throughout this noisy operation.

The second raingarden (bottom right) is being constructed in front of HSBC. It shows the installation of Strata Cells (black blocks) that provide structural strength and allow for drainage.

Strengthening Quay Street's seawall

Queens Wharf to Marsden Wharf (Q2M)

Many of you may have noticed that a large seawall piling rig has now made itself at home on Quay Street. Today, the rig will begin constructing a new Palisade Wall that will reinforce our very old existing seawall between Queens Wharf and Marsden Wharf.

The piling works start just east of the Captain Cook wharf gates and progress east towards Marsden Wharf. The rig will then return to Captain Cook and pile west towards Queens Wharf. There will be approximately one hundred piles to construct within this Q2M section with approximately four piles completed per week.

Different methodologies will be used at other locations along Quay Street (ie Jet Group piling at very eastern end of Quay Street), based on on location, ground conditions and design requirements. The outcome is the same at each location - safeguarding Auckland’s waterfront for the next 100 years.
