Durham Underutilized Food Festival

Worldwide, every year 1.3 billion tons of perfectly edible food is wasted because of cosmetic imperfections while 868 million people suffer from hunger. This Sunday, August 25th, join Bull City Burger & Brewery for a meal made of "underappreciated/underutilized/ugly" foods and they'll prove that it is what's on the inside that counts!

Recycle Right NC Campaign

We're excited to announce that we will be participating in the upcoming launch of North Carolina’s statewide anti-contamination campaign, Recycle Right NC! The campaign is being launched by NC DEQ in cooperation with partners across the state to clean up recycling through unified messaging.

Educating residents, the press, and local officials regarding recycling and contamination is a big job, and we're looking forward to being part of the solution. Recycling contamination has become a huge problem, resulting in many tons of recyclable materials ending up in landfills. This article explains some of the most common contaminants (though some of them don't apply to City of Durham recycling!) and what happens to contaminated recycling loads.

We can't wait to share these new resources with you, but in the meantime check out our blog for more information on local recycling and waste reduction tips!

East Durham Parks With Purpose

Parks are important places in our communities, where kids can play and families can gather. With thoughtful planning these natural areas can also support other important purposes, including absorbing and cleaning stormwater when it rains, and supporting training programs for green jobs.

The Ellerbe Creek Watershed Association are currently working to identify a potential location and develop plans for a new greenspace. Please join us to share what you would like to see in the park and help guide the planning process.

To get involved or learn more about the project, follow the Facebook page, which provides updates, upcoming events, and activities, and read and share this informational flyer.

We're excited to announce that we will have two new CTNC AmeriCorps members joining our team on September 6, 2019 for a 10-month service term!

Abby Gostling is a recent graduate from UNC-Chapel Hill with a degree in Economics and Global Studies. She has extensive experience organizing volunteer service-learning projects at UNC and volunteer coordination for multiple nonprofit organizations.

Emma Jablonski is a recent Master of Public Administration graduate from Appalachian State University with concentrations in Non-Profit Management and Environmental Policy. Her undergraduate degree is Spanish Language & Literature from University of Mississippi. She has researched recycling behavior change, conducted biological research, studied watershed governance, and worked as a farm apprentice.

Both will be valuable assets to the Keep Durham Beautiful team as they learn to apply their experiences to volunteer management, community outreach, and event organization to support and encourage environmental education and engagement here in Durham. We can't wait for you to meet them!
Thanks to a bird-friendly, bipartisan law championed by State Senator Bill Rabon and supported by NC Audubon advocates throughout the state, you'll soon see more native plants along North Carolina roadways. As a cause near and dear to our hearts, we couldn't be more excited!

Read more about the bill and the work to get it passed here!
Despite temperatures reaching over 90 degrees, 9 volunteers from City of Durham Water Management braved the heat and picked up trash at Camden Ave on Friday, July 12th. They were able to pick up 7 bags of trash, and 3 bags of recycling. We are so grateful for groups like this!
