Gardening at Night is a fresh, light twist on a Bloody Mary (a Bloody Mary for people who don't like Bloody Marys, even!) that makes use of summer veggies and herbs that you're growing at home or that you've spotted at the farmer's market. Tomatoes, cucumbers, and basil are the stars in this gin-based cocktail, but feel free to swap in other herbs that you love!
GARDENING AT NIGHT
By Chris Resnick, former bartender at Cardinal Spirits
1.5 ounces Cardinal Spirits Standard Dry Gin
1 ounce fresh tomato juice
1/2 ounce Cardinal Spirits Flora liqueur
1/2 ounce fresh lemon juice
1 slice cucumber
2 large basil leaves (1 for garnish)
Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker.
Add ice to the shaker, then shake well.
Strain (double strain if possible!) into a rocks glass filled with ice, then garnish with a basil leaf.
Recipe notes: Fresh tomato juice is really worth it here - it's kinda the whole point of the cocktail! Use a juicer or blender, or simply muddle a few big hunks in the bottom of the shaker. Speaking of muddling, if you really love the flavor of cucumber, maybe mash it up in the bottom of the shaker, too - that'll release the juices better than shaking alone!
