Safety Tip of the Month - check your toilet valves
The GPS connected to your AIS radio is used to report not only the position of your boat but also the speed and direction of travel of your craft. You never see your own AIS signal as it is transmitted from your boat and received by other boats.
When the AIS is set up it needs to have information entered into the device provding details of your boat including your identity (MMSI, name and registration) along with the relative postion of the GPS receiver on your boat so it can determine the direction of travel.
On the cruise north we have had
- One boat transmitting the incorrect registration as the AIS was set up when the boat was originally registered in Qld before being transferred to NSW
- One boat supposedly sailing sideways due to incorrect GPS location settings
Next time you are sailing in company it is good to communicate with another boat and ensure your AIS infomration is being transmitted correctly.
