Portuguese Beach Club Picnic (28 July)

The Club Picnic at Portuguese Beach is a great opportunity to socialise with other members of the club. The Commodore invites all Members and guests to enjoy a Sunday BBQ at Portuguese Beach. There will be a casual yacht race from 10am or just cruise at your own pace.

The club will supply a tender service from your boat to the beach and BBQ facilities.
There are 2 more picnics during winter (28 July and 25 August).

Estuary Cruise to Patonga Pub (3-4 August)

For those who missed out on the last estuary cruise to Patonga Pub, this is a great way to spend a day out. It is close enough to cruise up and enjoy a casual lunch and then sail home or go across the Refuge/America Bay for a relaxed evening.
The only caution is to make sure you get there and reserve a table before the ferry arrives (approx. 11:30 am) as dozens of people will come ashore for lunch.
Meet at the RMYC Port Pile at 10:30am if you want to sail in company or make your own way to Americas Bay.

Pittwater to Dunk Island Cruise - Update

The cruise is well underway with the 4 rendezvous next week.

Number of boats that have arrived at a rendezvous – 13
Number of miles cruised to date – more than 7000 nautical miles

Report from the Mackay Rendezvous
Five boats made it to the Mackay rendezvous (Kailani, Mix’d Nuts, Nirvanas Kitchen, Gypsy Princess and Galadriel). The strong southerly winds meant that most of the boats had an extended stay at the marina but this did create the opportunity to hire a car from the marina and do some shore excursions to the shops as well as the Eungella National Park to see platypi in the wild. Of course, with a number of boats in the same marina Sundowners became a regular occurrence and was a great opportunity to not only share stories from the cruise so far but also plan the next stage of the cruise.

The staff at the marina were extremely friendly and welcoming, putting on an official rendezvous BBQ for the group which included not only food but drinks as well. The staff gave up their own time after work to come along and have a chat. It is certainly a recommended stopover port and the marina is more than happy to take delivery of packages and hold them for you which makes getting deliveries very easy.

After almost 3 weeks the weather finally improved and all five boats were more than happy to head north.

Following the rendezvous all the boats headed off to explore the Whitsundays. You can read about the experiences on the Alfreds Cruising Facebook page

Whitehaven Beach is one of the iconic cruising locations as the picture below shows. The beach is 98% pure silica sand.
You can also check where the boats are planning to be on the calendar - Coral Coast 2019 Pittwater to Dunk Calendar

Boating Apps - Marinas

A number of marina’s are now moving into the digital era with marina apps which help you not only with the berth locations but also information about all the local facilities. It is recommended to download and install the app prior to arrival so you are not relying on internet coverage as you are sailing to your destination.

A few marina apps include
  • Hamilton Island app which not only provides information about the marina but also all the other things on the island
  • Coral Sea Marina and Resort app. Note that this used to be Abel Point Marina but since 1 July 2019 the resort and marina have combined under own ownership with the name Coral Sea Marina
  • Dalbora Marinas has an app covering all of their 7 marinas
  • Marina Exchange is a mobile app that allows marinas to list their vacant and transient berths. Boaters can rent these berths on-the-fly or request a booking for a future date via the app. Note at the moment not a lot of marinas participating.

If anyone knows of other marinas that have entered the digital age please let us know.

Safety Tip of the Month - check your toilet valves

The GPS connected to your AIS radio is used to report not only the position of your boat but also the speed and direction of travel of your craft. You never see your own AIS signal as it is transmitted from your boat and received by other boats.

When the AIS is set up it needs to have information entered into the device provding details of your boat including your identity (MMSI, name and registration) along with the relative postion of the GPS receiver on your boat so it can determine the direction of travel.

On the cruise north we have had

-       One boat transmitting the incorrect registration as the AIS was set up when the boat was originally registered in Qld before being transferred to NSW

-       One boat supposedly sailing sideways due to incorrect GPS location settings

Next time you are sailing in company it is good to communicate with another boat and ensure your AIS infomration is being transmitted correctly.
