Hi All

Welcome to the August edition of your newsletter. Our next club night is this Thursday 1 August at the Pupuke Golf Club.

I've definitely been missing out by the looks of the pictures from the rides.  Life has been getting in the way of riding lately and I'm amping to get back on the bikes.  With winter sports coming to an end this will happen soon.

Continue reading the newsletter if you want to find out more on the ACC Rego Cash Back Scheme and also find out more about how ProRider are offering North Harbour Ulysses members free Ride Forever courses.

So you can do the course free course that helps you become a better rider and as a bonus it gets you part way to getting your Rego Cash back.  Check out the ProRider link below and click on the button below the ProRider ad for Q&As on the Rego Cashback Scheme.

Remember I'm always looking for stories and content and I'm happy with any length and most subjects. The more disgraceful the better.

This Sunday is looking like it will be a stunner so let's all get out and head to Waipu Cove with Linda.  Details  in the Upcoming Rides section below.

I would have to say this has been a very cold month but one that has warmed my heart and made me even prouder to call myself a Ulyssean and a member of the North Harbour Branch.
You guys and gals really stepped up to the plate with the fund raising for The Wilson Home Trust.

The goal started at $2,500 then went out to $3,000 and hit the $4,000 mark on the presentation night which only took 2 months. Given that Wilson Home was expecting that we might get something together for them by Christmas. So when we invited them along to the presentation Carol was expecting to give a talk to give an insight as to what they do to help motivate the members with the fund raising needless to say they were totally blown away and so thankful for what we achieved.

I personally would like to give an enormous thank-you to Peter Webb for his efforts, efforts that were made possible by the generosity of members. Now we are thinking about the next charity and have started talks with NS Hospice. In saying this you can still donate to any of our current Charities through the bank account. See the website for details.

I attended the twists and turns this month and it was great to get back into the slow riding bought back memories of riding in the Drill Team, if you haven’t been along to these, I urge you to get out and give it a go. Now talking about rider training the following information should interest all our members.

ACC Motorcycle Rego Cash Back Programme

I spoke with ProRider and have arranged the following deal with Pro Rider for North Harbour Branch Members and this has been extended to Auckland Branch Members

Get cash back by doing your Ride Forever Silver and Gold courses with Pro Rider

As part of the Cashback Offer Pro Rider will waive the $50 registration fee for all Ulysses members attending a Ride Forever course. Just use the code ULYR4E when you make your course booking.

Find a course date that suits you
•          You can book on to an existing SILVER or GOLD course using the code ULYR4E.
•          Or we can create one for you on a date to suit; for this to go ahead we need a minimum of 4 riders and a maximum of 6. Just contact the office on 09 973 3456 or email office@prorider.co.nz and we can set this up for you, then we’ll send you a registration link so that friends can attend too.
Cashback Pilot
Get $100 cashback - this is exactly what ACC is offering riders who do Ride Forever Silver and Gold courses.
The cashback offer is a pilot scheme and will be trialled for two years, it is open to riders who live in NZ and who’ve held a full New Zealand Class 6 licence for five years or more and have a current motorcycle registration.
Riders can claim their cashback, paid into their New Zealand bank account, by supplying a photo of their current motorcycle rego. Simply take two courses (at least three months apart) and you can claim $100 cashback and then in 12 months’ time you can claim another $100 which = $200 all up.
There’s good news for anyone who has already been on a Ride Forever Silver or Gold course - so long as it was taken after 1 July 2016 it can count as the first course in your cashback claim.
The cashback adds to existing incentives, including several discounts and reimbursements on things like insurance. This is on top of the substantial subsidy on the courses themselves (ACC pays $249 per course while each rider contributes a maximum of $50 per course).
To find out if you are eligible here is the criteria -
•          For riders living in NZ who have had their full NZ Class 6 licence for at              least 5 years
•          Who will have completed two Ride Forever Silver or Gold courses (one            can be historical)
•          Have a current registration label for their bike
•          Cashback offer is per rider, not per motorcycle, you can only apply once            regardless of how many motorcycles you have
•          $200 cashback is paid in 2 x $100 instalments over two years
For full details about the cashback, see rideforever.co.nz/cashback

Twists & Turns with Barry and John
July 10 - Charlie Tee
Eight riders today. I suggested either Muriwai or Dargaville as destinations, and people preferred the shorter ride. Colin Crawford led us via Waitoki and Old North Road. On Foster Road there was new seal on a corner and it had very little grip, so almost all of us lost traction briefly, but no one came to harm. After a stop at the gannet colony, we arrived at Muriwai cafe about 11:30, and sat in the sun chatting over lunch until 1 pm.

17 July - Charlie Tee
Five people on the ride today, and four more came to the meeting point. Two of those were planning to ride with us, but one of their bikes had a flat battery, so they came in a car. Philip Burns led us to Helensville, up SH16 to Wellsford, then to Whanga Eats, a new container cafe on Matakana Valley Road near the intersection with Whangaripo Valley Road. They do good food.

During lunch, the usual tall tales turned to the subject of encounters we've had with aircraft while riding. The best story, which is probably true, was from one of our number who found a light aircraft parked on a beach near Pouto point. He rode a few donuts around it, as you do. On his way back to Dargaville, there was a loud buzzing to his side and he looked around to see the aircraft flying a few metres away from him. The pilot waved to him, then opened his throttle and soared off!

After lunch we went through Matakana to Warkworth, and the others continued on Woodcocks Road while I went home on SH1. Good ride, and the weather behaved itself.

18 July - Wayne Painter
North Harbour members enjoy a dinner night at
Elevations on the Scenic Drive. great views.
thanks Shane for taking us by coach

21 July - John Heebink
A Scenic Leisure Tour.

A dozen people came on this ride today for an easy ride on beautiful roads. An extra bonus today was the good company and thanks Peter for organising the sunny weather. On a day as today it should be Sunny being a Sunday…!
We meandered from Albany and Ridge Road towards Riverhead and on to Kaukapakapa.
We had our first stop next to the Fire station.
By this time the fog was completely gone. Via Highway 16 and Woodcocks Road we crossed Highway 1.
Two people needed to go home on time to earn some brownie points and left the group in Warkworth.
With 10 people we stopped in Warkworth lunch at the lovely Little & Local Coffee Kitchen.
After lunch 2 riders followed me to Martin’s Bay and 1 rider came with me to Mahurangi West. It was a first time visit for him and we admired the quietness at the sunny peaceful beach.

Thank you all for joining me and thanks Dave for being tail end Charlie.

23 August - Charlie Tee
Thirteen riders today, and two more came to the meeting point to socialise. It was a glorious winter's day. Tony Kay led us through back roads I didn't even know existed to Whitford, then we took the loop around Maraetai and came back west to find even more obscure back roads to the south of Waiuku. This all took some time, so we were famished by the time we got to our lunch stop at Karaka General Store!

24 July - John Heebink
Fifteen men and their mighty machine arose from sometimes heavy fog to meet in Albany under a blazing sun.

Some machine where mightier than others, but one was so big and beautiful that it had three wheels.

After a short debate and a vote we selected to go to Tawharanui Regional Park and have lunch in Omaha afterwards.

Nobody came forward to lead the ride, so I offered my service. Thanks Charlie to look after the tail end.

Two riders said there goodbye at the first stop in Kaukapakapa. And another rider left us just before lunch.

To our surprise the carpark was almost full in Tawharanui and the reason became clear when we walked toward the beach.

The surf was up and a lot of people like us did not do any work and took the opportunity to enjoy the “sun and the surf”, or in our case "sun and ride”.

Thanks you all for the company and remember we have a nice day coming up this Saturday.

If it rains, come in the car. Watch this space.

Departing Warehouse covered carpark in Albany at 10.00am
Destination decided on the day.
These rides are proving very popular.
Andrew Leader runs the "Twists and Turns" low speed manoeuvring sessions that Ulysses set up some years ago.

They are run on the first Saturday of the month at  Kelston Girls High School, 1 Archibald Rd, Kelston, West Auckland 0602.

All North Harbour members are invited to attend.
It’s a great opportunity to practice all those key low speed skills in a safe, supportive environment.  For instance when did you last practice an emergency stop?  Plenty of skilled riders attend to help with technique and encouragement and they are not judgemental.  Better to practice where there are people to help pick the bike up if you lay it down!
The school entrance is first on your right as you turn off Great North Road into Archibald Road:

Story from a Kansas State Highway Patrol officer :

Description: Description: C:\Users\Brenda\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\WNQNHZ5F\MP900402673[1].jpgI made a traffic stop on an elderly lady the other day for speeding

on U.S. 166 Eastbound at Mile Marker 73 just East of Sedan, KS.

I asked for her driver's license, registration, and proof of insurance.

The lady took out the required information and handed it to me.

In with the cards I was somewhat surprised (due to her advanced age)

to see she had a conceal carry permit. I looked at her and ask if

she had a weapon in her possession at this time.

She responded that she indeed had a .45 automatic in her glove box.

Something---body language, or the way she said it---made me want

to ask if she had any other firearms. She did admit to also having

a 9mm Glock in her center console. Now I had to ask one more

time if that was all. She responded once again that she did have

just one more, a .38 special in her purse. I then asked her what

was she so afraid of.

She looked me right in the eye and said, "Not a fucking thing!"
