Hello hello hello!

I hope we can all breath a sigh of relief now that the second season of Big Little Lies is over. That stench will linger for a long time. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely loved the experience of watching it, but yeah, just come on. Also the aquarium dude was the kid from Big Love! It was all too weird.

While I'm in a reflective mood, I need to make one very hyperlocal complaint that I think other fellow Victorians might be able to get behind. Three words. Royal. Auto. Magazine.

Firstly, why does this exist? Secondly, why does it refuse to die and literally follow me around Melbourne.

Seriously, I have called numerous times, written numerous emails, done numerous semaphore numbers on the street outside of their head office, and yet it still somehow manages to find me every month. Either at home or at the office, wrapped in plastic, and then always recycled. It feels like I'm being followed around constantly being offered Royal Auto (now spelled a bit cooler though, in all lowercase in one word - royalauto) like green eggs and ham.

So yes, If you ever find me writing a newsletter intro where I extol the virtues of the amazing work that the RACV does (which I actually do think is pretty amazing), then you'll know they finally got to me. I just hope they don't get to you first.

Until then, the actual droids you are looking for are below.

Beep beep!

The Podcast

This week! We’re going through our open tabs and will be discussing briefing via twitter and the fine art of pitching!

“As an illustrator, if you’re doing your job right - have a strong online presence on various platforms, reach out and form meaningful relationships with clients who will like your work, pursue self-initiated work and continue to develop your technical and aesthetic muscles over time, the clients will find you, and you will naturally find your audience.”

Each week on our podcast we dissect three links we’ve come across our internet travels. These are jumping off points for what’s shaping issues, processes and happenings in the creative industries today. To find our more about our IRL open tabs events, visit opentabs.rodeo

We discuss how best to approach a vague brief.

Then we share our own tips with this article ‘How to Pitch a Project’

The Gallery

Lamington Drive is an exhibition space, art school and a great way to meet other artists. Feeling lonely? Come to a show!

Lamington Drive Residency

LDR operates in two parts – 4 emerging illustrators and image-makers will work in-residence at the gallery for a duration of 8 weeks, encouraging on-site production and exploration (which will be open to the eyes of the public throughout).

This is followed by a dedicated group exhibition of the finished work created in that time, opening mid August.

Come down to the gallery between 11-6pm Wednesdays through Fridays and 12-5 Saturdays to check out what our residents are getting up to!

The above artwork is by current LD resident Nina Elliott.

The Gardens

Clear the mind. Feed the process. Jacky Winter Gardens is a creative retreat nestled in a half-acre of natural bushland only 45 minutes from Melbourne. It’s a perfect getaway for solo travellers, couples and small groups.

"Art takes nature as its model."
