"Ebb and Flow"

Life and nature ebbs and flows and as we create art, it also ebbs and flows over time. As time goes on, we come back to the art we used to do and then we create new things that help us move forward. The show will explore the movement of our creativity from past to future, the ebb and flow of our work.

Cindy Conder will offer some new glass creations with a focus on wave forms, color mixing and free-form shapes. Conder's techniques for this show have resulted in new pieces with an organic feeling to them, created by encouraging the glass to move during the firing process. The impression of movement and flow is then caught within the glass itself.

"There is a constant conflict within my mind. The engineer in me wants everything under control, clean and neat. The artist in me wants more movement and flow. This past year I have been working toward that flow. I’ve been working on wave forms, mixing colors, and allowing more organic shapes, and trying to get the glass to move, or give the impression of movement, so many of my newer pieces have a more organic look and feel. I’m hoping the viewer will be drawn into the piece, and notice the movement within." Cindy Conder

For the August “Ebb and Flow” show, Lori decided to return to some of the traditional metalsmithing she did in the past and use some of the stones she has collected to create her new work. Much thought has gone into the creation of each piece and she hopes people will enjoy her “stones” as much as she has.

For many years, Lori has collected stones and rocks from wherever she has traveled. She has collected sapphires from Montana, Herkimer diamonds from New York, rubies from India, petrified food from Michigan, amber from Russia, Jade from China, sunstone from Oregon and stones from many more places. Her collection has grown but stayed hidden until now.

Please join us on Friday, August 2nd from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. to enjoy a the work of Lori Garcy and Cindy Conder at Gallery Calapooia, 222 First Ave. W. in downtown Albany. The reception will include the works of Garcy, Conder and 18 other mid-valley artists. Wine, beer and snacks will be served.

GC welcomes new artist J.J. Jones Sr.

Gallery Calapooia is proud to introduce the beautiful wood lathe work of Corvallis artist, J.J. Jones, Sr. J.J. has been a high school math and physical education teacher, a YMCA Physical Director, and also a small business owner and Oregon Realtor for 29 years. Since 1985, he has been doing wood lathe work, turning a marvelous variety of creations of all shapes and sizes, from utilitarian pieces like pepper grinders to magnificent large bowls, platters and "hollow turnings" - vases with small openings.

J.J.’s pieces are all beautifully crafted to bring out the unique beauty of each material. His favorite woods are Oregon myrtlewood and maple burl. He uses hawthorn, elm, mahogany, cherry, mimosa, walnut, and Osage orange to name a few - each wood different to work with and beautiful in its own way. Some of J.J.’s most interesting pieces are made from burls. A burl is caused by some kind of stress to the tree - an injury, a virus or fungus, insect infestation or mold growth. From the outside of the tree, a burl looks like a bump, but for woodworkers, the stress results in a uniquely patterned wood highly prized for it’s beauty. J.J. not only works with woods of many kinds, but he makes a wide variety of items. He says, “I have three lathes at this time. One is a mini lathe for small turnings. My major lathe will turn an item twenty four inches in diameter by thirty six inches in length. A friend and I built my largest lathe which can turn forty plus inches in diameter and five feet in length.”

J.J. states that he does not cut down a tree for the wood. “I receive wood from trees other people cut down for thinning or because of blow down.” JJ enjoys starting a new piece on his lathe and having the satisfaction of seeing the beauty that his work brings out in the wood.

Lori was selected as one of seven Oregon artists to do an installation of their work at Oregon Garden in 2019. Her copper flowers can be found in the Conifer section of the Garden and are for sale. She hopes you will enjoy her display.

Bill Thompson has been busy!

BROKEN YOLK' IS NO MORE, WELCOME 'WISE CRACKS'

At the end of June, the Broken Yolk Cafe in Corvallis closed it's doors to reopen a week later with a brand new name, ‘Wise Cracks’. Gallery Calapooia artist Bill Thompson was asked to create a series of 15 new vinyl portraits based on well known comedians, past and present, in order to mark the occasion and deck the walls with a relevant new look. When in Corvallis, please pop by, enjoy a coffee and a snack and view Bills' recent work.

Anna Harris and Bill Thompson team up for CHS theatre program

Set designs created by Anna Harris and Bill Thompson for a June 30 show, entitled “Circus”, performed at Corvallis High School Theatre by the dance group “Urban Movement."

George Rodriguez: Embellished Narratives
at Hallie Ford Museum in Salem,

Seattle artist George Rodriguez (American, born 1982) creates figurative ceramic sculptures that explore his Chicano heritage, political issues surrounding the US and Mexico border, and the shared humanity of people around the world.

Organized by curator Jonathan Bucci, this major exhibition presents work created over the past 10 years. Ideas of ceremony, ritual, and cross-cultural mythology all combine in Rodriguez’s bold yet whimsical artwork. Inspired by childhood memories, international travel, border politics, and the history of art, his richly decorated and tactile sculptures draw the viewer in with a mixture of humor and gravity to address concepts of community and identity in our global culture.

New Fabric store opens in downtown Albany

"Brigitte's Place is a fabric store focused on bringing fashion fabrics and trims to garment sewers. We've sourced fabrics fron India, Denmark, Japan, Italy and some from China. We are looking to bring in an even greater variety as time goes on. We also carry patterns from several independent pattern designers and will continue to to expand oue selection. Classes have been scheduled for July and August with more being created for September through the end of the year. Please come join us for our "Sewcials" every 2nd Tuesday of the month from 9-11 am and every 1st Friday of the month from 5-7 pm. Bring a project to sew, or just come to chat with like minded people, it's entirely up to you. Hope to see you soon. Feel free to stop in any time. Maybe we can do drinks sometime."

New Art Gallery to open in downtown Albany

Gallery Calapooia is pleased to welcome The Crow's Foot, a new art gallery opening soon in downtown Albany. It is the dream of Tricia Greaves, a local artist who is well known in the community.
