Happy September!

WHOA!!! Was that a quick summer or what??

For parents who are preparing their children for another school year, I'm here to remind you that time does go too quickly, so please try to enjoy the hectic schedule, the sports practices, the dance recitals and homework because this month the focus is all about SELF CARE.

We tend to speed through life and before you know it, we blink and it's just a distant memory. SO, I urge you to step on the brakes, be present and enjoy the moment because as you know, Christmas is only three months away! HO HO HO! (sorry, I couldn't resist LOL)

I hope you are following me on Facebook, Instagram or LinkedIn as I post observational dates throughout the month because I believe in celebrating everyday, so why not join me virtually!

Here are a few dates to celebrate this month:
  • International Self Awareness Month
  • National Children Awareness Month
  • Children's' Good Manners Month
  • International Speak Out Month
  • International Women's Friendship Month
  • International People Skills Month
Until next month...
Sarah

P.S. Please keep reading as I have some great stuff to share below!

Outgrown Your Home?

Just as the leaves fall, we realize the season is changing and we tend to notice other things like the fact that we might have outgrown the place we have being calling home. Here are some signs that might have you considering a move.

  1. You need more space.
Needing more space is the most common reason people upgrade to a new home. For any number of reasons, you might want an extra bedroom, a larger living room, a bigger backyard, or a more spacious kitchen. Rather than put up with feeling cramped, consider exploring the extra space a new home can provide.

  2. A renovation won’t fix it.
Sometimes, when a property doesn’t fit its owners’ needs anymore, they consider a renovation. For example, if they need more space for a home office, they convert a spare room. However, a renovation doesn’t always fix the problem. For example, building a double, rather than single driveway and garage, may not be possible given the constraints of your property. Only a new home can solve that problem.

  3. You’re interested in a new neighbourhood.
The neighbourhood may have been perfect for you at one time. But your needs evolve. You may now be looking for something the area doesn’t provide - like closer access to a recreational activity your family enjoys, or a more convenient commute to work. If that’s the case, it might be time to look at other neighbourhoods you’d like to consider, and see what types of homes are currently available there.

  4. It’s time for a change.
Sometimes you simply feel it’s time for a change. There’s nothing wrong with that. Don’t feel you need a practical reason to sell and find a new home. If this feels like the right time for you and your family to move, go for it.

Let's celebrate the harvest of fresh seasonal fruits with this delicious recipe!!

Salted Caramel Apple And Pear Buckles

Ingredients

  • For the crumb topping
  • ¾ cup all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup plus 2 tablespoons light brown sugar
  • ½ cup oats
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon lemon zest
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
For the Cake
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground ginger
  • ¼ teaspoon fresh ground nutmeg
  • ⅛ teaspoon all-spice
  • ⅛ teaspoon cloves
  • ⅛ teaspoon cardamon
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 12 tablespoons (1½ sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup honey
  • 1 teaspoon fresh lemon zest
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon almond extract
  • 2 large eggs
  • ¾ cups buttermilk
  • 1 large granny smith apple, peeled and diced
  • 1 large gala (or red skinned) apple, peeled and diced
  • 1 large red pear, pealed and diced
  • 1 cup salted caramel (see recipe in archives)

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.

  2. To make the crumb topping: In a medium bowl, combine all of the ingredients except the butter. Mix until evenly combined. Add the diced butter and crumble with your hands or pastry blender until it resembles coarse crumbs the size of peas. Set aside.

  3. To make the batter: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, spices, salt, and baking powder. In a separate bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 3 to 5 minutes. Add the honey, zest, vanilla, almond extract and eggs. Mix until evenly combined. It'll look curdled, that's okay. Add the dry ingredients, alternately with the buttermilk, starting and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined after each addition. Do not over-mix! Fold in the chopped apples and pears.

  4. Divide the batter evenly among 7 individual 8 oz tart pans, or spread into a 9-inch spring form pan that has been greased and floured. You can also use a 9 or 10-inch square baking dish. Sprinkle the tops of each with the salted caramel. Top with the crumble from earlier. Bake for about 30 to 35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center, comes out clean. Remove from oven and allow to cool down about 15 minutes before serving. Dust with powdered sugar or serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Leftovers can be well wrapped and kept at room temperature for up to 4 days.
Notes
  1. yield: 7 mini buckles or 1, 9-inch round buckle
