CRC research and students highlight 2019 COE Summit

CRC had a big presence at the 2019 COE Summit, a gathering of Department of Homeland Security Centers of Excellence on July 31-Aug. 1. CRC moderated a panel on "Community Awareness and Engagement” that included a focus on the Plan Integration for Resilience Scorecard (PIRS); had multiple students participate in the Grand Challenge and poster competition; and presented on PIRS and the ADCIRC Prediction System™ during the Innovation Showcase.

Students representing Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU) participated in the Grand Challenge event, which asked students to consider emerging threats to homeland security posed by Unmanned Aerial Systems and develop a strategy to counter it. JCSU student William Case presented on behalf of the Purple Team, which won second place in the competition.

CRC's Summer Research Team partners at Florida A&M University and Elizabeth City State University presented posters describing the work they did over the summer program with teams at North Carolina State University and Old Dominion University, respectively.

CRC's focus on increasing
diversity in HSE workforce

The Coastal Resilience Center is committed to increasing the representation of minority groups in the Homeland Security Enterprise (HSE), in emergency management, planning and engineering fields.

To meet this goal, the CRC is partnering with four Minority-Serving Institutions (MSIs) to create undergraduate and graduate programs to improve access to the education needed to pursue careers in these fields.

We have added a new video and a page detailing our programs on our website. The video is part of a series exploring CRC impacts; we have so far looked at how CRC works to educate the next generation of hazards professionals. You can see all of the videos on our website and on our YouTube page.

Straub named Knauss Fellowship finalist

Jessamin Straub, a graduate student in marine sciences who took part in the Coastal Resilience Center (CRC)’s education programs, and who received a Department of Homeland Security-funded Education & Workforce Development grant through the CRC, has been named a finalist for a prestigious fellowship.

Straub, who will graduate in August from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, was among four students in North Carolina to be named a finalist for the 2020 Knauss Fellowship.

Read more about the award and straub's work with CRC on our website.

CRC in the News

CRC researchers have been in the news over the past month, talking about threats from Hurricane Barry and the ADCIRC Prediction System™: You can see all media appearances by our partners at on our Media Coverage page on the CRC website.

Learn about the ADCIRC
Prediction System

The CRC has launched adcircprediction.org, a website focusing on the ADCIRC Prediction System™ (APS). APS combines the ADCIRC model, ADCIRC Surge Guidance System and CERA mapping tool to provide timely, high-resolution information on coastal storm surge, waves, flooding and winds.

Learn more about APS and the tools that make it work here, and read a story from DHS S&T here.
