Dear all,
Winter is upon us, and with it the weather for indoor events. Accordingly I'm down south in the next couple of weeks, giving talks about how to deepen democracy and create citizen-led governments fit for the 21st century.
I'm speaking in Queenstown next Monday, July 29, 6pm at the Hilton Hotel; in Wanaka on Thursday, August 1, 7pm at the Lake Wanaka Centre; and in Dunedin on Monday, August 5, 11am at Otago University. Details of all these events here. Please do come along, or spread the word to those who might want to.
Elsewhere, the case for a wealth tax in New Zealand continues to grow. I'm writing a policy briefing on the subject, to be released later in the year. I'll also be working on a major investigation into wealth inequality, using new (and largely unexplored) data from 2017-18. And look out for a discussion in this weekend's paper of the growing number of extremely rich people in New Zealand. (I note also Elizabeth Warren's success in the US promoting a wealth tax.)
I'll be discussing wealth taxes – and other related ideas such as land and inheritance taxes – with Prof Lisa Marriott at two events next month. One will be in Dunedin on the evening of Monday, August 5, and one in Auckland on the evening of Monday, August 12. Details here.
Regards,
Max Rashbrooke
