Propose your own (mini) park

People love parklets. So DDOT is accepting applications for PARK(ing) Day 2019, a national day to reimagine and reclaim public space by converting parking spaces into tiny public parks, scheduled for September. Maybe it’s a mini mini golf course, a kiddie pool or a dance floor—anything goes!

Fox Loves Taco no more

The twee little Brookland taco store follows its bike-shop neighbor across the Small Business Rainbow Bridge

Kim Kardashian went to jail

But not like that. Kim K was touring the DC Jail recently for a documentary on criminal justice reform, spending time with members of the Young Men Emerging unit for 18 to 25-year-olds.

  • To do: “Storytelling shatters stigmas.” A local nonprofit hosts a workshop tonight to help people talk about their experiences in the criminal justice system.

Human highway

Two engaging CityLab articles on big, fast roads in America:

“How late-night workers commute without Metro”

Amsterdam Falafelshop's workers keep it open late for your drunchies. But when they get off, between 2 and 5 am, Metro isn't running, and they face byzantine bus routes or costly taxis. “I’m out here grinding. I am like ‘why do I have to go through all of this?’”

Looking ahead: Play human bingo this weekend

Apparently this is a thing and you (yes you!) can do it this weekend at the roof of Union Market. (Saturday, 6pm)

DC Music & Arts Showcase

Head to the precious punk carriage house that is Dwell for their first arts and music showcase, featuring crafts and merch for sale. BYO food and drink to share. (6pm)

  • Parents: A kids' band performs tonight under the trees in the Arboretum (and District Distillery is serving Civic Vodka). (6 pm)

Outdoor movie screening

Pop a squat on the lawn at the Library of Congress to watch A League of Their Own. Ben’s Chili Bowl will be slinging hot dogs, but bring your own blanket/chairs and snacks and get there a bit early for a primo spot. (7pm, or just go to A League of Her Own)

Reminders from the Weekly Scheduler

  • Head to The Cheshire to toast to Pakke Social’s first art show coming to an end, complete with music, art and their creators, drinks, and more in a warehouse. Tix are $15 and event is wheelchair accessible. (8pm)

  • The first solo record from musician and author Ian Svenonious is out and he’s at Songbyrd to make an introduction. Hear it for yourself. (7pm)
