Famous KPS Mono Interclub.

Done and dusted for another year, we had lots of visitors and Gary really put together a great night with the AVs of each of the categories along with comments from Judge Mark Teague.

Medals for first place from Knox were won by Richard Kelly and Gary Dawson, also a Commended by Di McCormack.

Although we do not have aggregate winners, Williamstown seemed to be out the front most, followed by Waverley.
Thanks everyone that chipped in at the beginning and end of the night to set up and put away, there is quite a lot to do on Mono Interclub night.

Film Noir Prac night request.
Judging by the amount of images that have been posted and shared around, you all enjoyed the night.
A request from the band : could you send Rob some of your band pics, obviously the band cannot take pics of themselves.
Email to Rob: msec@optusnet.com.au
Again thanks to everyone that helped to set up and tear down.

Mark to compete at World Games.

Shortly Mark will be off to Newcastle in the UK to compete in the World Transplant games (Ten Pin Bowling).
We wish Mark best wishes and success, but most of all have a great time and safe travels.

Print Run

KPS is doing a bulk print order to a Lab in NSW. You need to give your images to Martin on or before first meeting in August, ie. 14th August.

Basically:

- only 2 print sizes 18x12" and 12 x18

- no borders - if you want one (highly recommended for mounting) then build it into your print file - suggest 0.5"

- for other than 3x2 (1.5:1 ) aspect ratios just centre the image on a template matching your paper size and cut off the excess white when you get the print back.

- no choice of paper, mat finish only for colour and b&w.

- set print resolution at 300 pixels per inch

- prefer- send files to Martin Rowe email f8125sec@gmail.com either via WeTransfer or Dropbox

- alternatively hand to Martin on USB or CD/DVD

- include your name in filename to help identify prints

Cost would be approx $2 for 8 x 12s and $3 for 12 x 18s . (2018 prices), maybe a bit more taking in shipping.

Desired resolution: 300 DPI or 3600 x 2400 pixels for the 12" x 8" and 5400 x 3600 for the 18" x 12". File naming: This is important. Please put your initials at the start of the filename!

The file size must not exceed 10Meg. If it does exceed 10Meg it will be resized to be meet the 10Meg limit set by the printers. All care but no responsibility. File sizing should be done before being given to Martin.

Talk with Martin or Gary for further info.

KPS – Knox Council Bio Diversity Project Update

KPS has started to collect images of parks and reserves within Knox in conjunction with Knox Council.

We hope that council will archive these images for future use but to make these images a useful resource for not only immediate use but for future generations, it is imperative that each image has a unique identifier and that each image also has information about the subject such as location and date.

Otherwise, the collection will just be a random collection of pictures of parks, somewhere in Knox.

Committee will give some thought about the best way to achieve useful image data given the variety of computer skill levels among our members.

In the interim, can members please select the images you wish to submit then rename them as follows:

Name of Bushland Reserve Image Number - Photographers Name
For example:

  • Mansons Reserve 1- Mary Smith
  • Mansons Reserve 2- Mary Smithr
  • Mansons Reserve 3- Mary Smith
Please make full size jpg files at about 80% in Lightroom and save into a folder called Mansons
Copy this folder to a USB stick then hand to either Rob or Ray.
Alternatively, transfer to Rob via WeTransfer.

Our naming system will allow a unique name for each file as well as showing the name of the reserve and the photographer for those users who don't utilise IPTC data.

Ideally, everyone should know how to apply IPTC data to their images using software such as Lightroom but sadly this is not the case.

If you are interested, Google 'adding IPTC in Lightroom' or similar.

Now check out the full report on last Tuesday's walk by KPS roving reporter Kath Edens.

Tuesday 23rd July, Manson Reserve, Selkirk Ave,  Wantirna was the first of our walks for taking images of the parks and bushland areas for the Knox Council Bio Diversity Project.

Getting ready. The rain has stopped and the sun is peaking through the grey clouds.

Bella patiently waits for the walk to start. The bushland part of the reserve has a variety of native birds enjoying the wattle which is out in flower now. Dandenong Creek runs through the reserve.

Which way to go? Decisions! Decisions!

The paths here are shared with dog walkers and bicycle riders, so meandering photographers have to be aware of the lycra lizards who speed along the path as if they are in the Tour de France! There are riders who enjoy a leisurely ride like this guy, I tried to take a panned photo – need more lessons on that one!

Having a friendly chat with a dog walker. Bella is a little concerned the way that big dog is looking at her but the lady assures us that her dog is very friendly.

There are sports grounds here for Soccer and Football. Quite a large park with paths that lead you to Ringwood, Bayswater and Wantirna.

Here we are at a coffee shop in The Mall, Wantirna, enjoying good coffee and great conversation.

Cheers

Kathleen Edens

We have received the invitation to participate in the Mornington Peninsula Camera Club Novice Print Interclub. The Judging night is 22nd August and we will need submissions by Wednesday 24th July.
The competition is open only to Novice members and there is no set subject. Key parts of their entry rules are below.

Keeping within the spirit of this competition for ‘B’ Graders/Novice workers, digital manipulation is to be kept to a minimum. General cloning and tidying up is permissible, the adding of skies, etc is not.
Images must be mounted on a 16x20 mat board and the usual VAPS rules re thickness, taping etc apply. Core board is not allowed. Images can be any size within the 16x20 mat size.
We can submit up to 10 large prints, with a maximum of 2 prints per member.
We will have collected some merit-awarded prints by then but you are still encouraged to submit any new prints you have.

Croydon Camera House – make sure you tell them you are a KPS member, it is a good idea to ask for Nigel.
It's also a good idea to find your best price online from an Australian retailer then see if Croydon Camera House will price match.
