Spring is here! Time to dust off that research project, writing idea or family tree and see if you can use the archives to take them further. It's not just family historians and academics that use the Reading Room to access BRAC records - our patrons include business people, artists, authors, people looking for information on their property for insurance or heritage reasons - even families looking to settle disagreements about exactly where grandma's house was in the 1940s! It's always worth thinking about how the archives can help with any problem or query you come across in your work or personal life - it's amazing how often we can help.

BRAC Turned Ten!
On June 29, BRAC celebrated ten years in operation with two magnificent speakers Dr David Waldron and Dr Charles Fahey who discussed the use of the archives in broader research and writing. Thank you to everyone who attended, it was a fantastic day with two fascinating talks - you can view photos from the event HERE.

Wild Cats in the Whipstick
Following on from Dr Waldron's talk in June, we thought we'd investigate the archives and see what we could discover about panthers, tigers and lions in the Central Goldfields - and were surprised at what we found! Have a read here about the Kamarooka Panther, the tenuous Tantaloona Tiger, and the Dentist's Lion Cub... READ

Langston Street in Fifteen Objects
BRAC is excited to be opening our first major exhibition for 2019, launching on Thursday 10 October to coincide with History Week. The exhibition will showcase items that represent the extraordinary people who lived in this ordinary street since the 1860s and hopefully inspire visitors to research their own house and street - more information will be available closer to launch date.

Collection Focus: Shire of McIvor Rate Books
BRAC holds the set of rate records for the historic Shire of McIvor (click for map) from 1879 to 1948. Records are divided into four ridings and are recorded alphabetically by surname and occupant; for each household, information on the occupant, their occupation, the owner (where different to the occupier) and sometimes their address, description of the property, township location and value. You can order items from this series to the Reading Room HERE.

Very Special Book Event at BRAC
Jill Giese, clinical psychologist and winner of the 2018 Victorian Premier’s History Award for her book The Maddest Place On Earth, joins us in Bendigo on Saturday 16 November. In 19th-century Victoria, goldfields were booming but also hiding an alarming fact – Victoria had the highest rate of insanity in the world. In response, a grand asylum project for its citizens was embarked upon. Jill shares this intriguing history through a fascinating fusion of scholarship, storytelling and real-life accounts on a historical malady that remains entirely modern - the event is free but bookings are a must!

After Hours Archives
As part of Family History Month, BRAC extended the Reading Room open hours to a Saturday to enable researchers who can't attend on a weekday to further their genealogy and historical research.
We were able to help many visitors finding out about their ancestors, with the history of the houses where they lived, or relatives have lived, and of course celebrated International Bat Day with a pop-up exhibition! Thank you to everyone who visited.
