Hello Friend,

Even though this coming school year has yet to begin, it’s not too early for parents to start thinking about 2020-2021. For students who will be in 6th grade this fall, it’s time to start preparing for a potential 7th grade option:
one of Boston’s exam schools.

Boston’s exam schools have a long history of lacking diversity: only 7.5 percent of Boston Latin School students were Black and 12.5 percent were Latino last school year (2018-19), compared with the 30.9 percent of Black students and 42.1 percent of Latino students that comprise the BPS student body as a whole.  

In an effort to increase access to exam schools among Black and Latino students, BPS will offer the Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE) - a key component of the exam school application - to current 6th graders during the school day this fall (previously, the ISEE was only offered on the weekend).

There are many steps and deadlines involved with the exam school application process, so we have compiled answers - based on resources that BPS has published - to some questions that parents may have in the blog post below.
