SPROUTING IN THE SAME SOIL

Perhaps one of the most fascinating aspects of Black Mountain College's history is the seemingly dichotomous relationship between its international influences and rural, southern setting. Over time, we've come to understand that these two aspects of its history are not in opposition but rather amplify one another to create a singular environment and moment in time.

It is this spirit that has come through in our current exhibitions, BAUHAUS 100 and Materials, Sounds + Black Mountain College, which examine BMC's international roots and showcase how its influences can be found across the globe as well as within Western North Carolina. It's fitting that our summer season is coming to a close with a series of programs that put local artists and friends at the forefront.

Learn more about what we have coming up as well as a gorgeous tribute to the legendary Jargon Press publication White Trash Cooking from The Bitter Southerner.

A tribute to the author of White Trash Cooking, a landmark publication of the Jargon Society Press.

"In spring of 1986, Ernest 'Ernie' Matthew Mickler’s White Trash Cooking landed on bookshelves across America — a 160-page, spiral-bound anthology of Southern recipes, stories, and photographs.

Oddly enough, damned near everyone loved it. It was immediately revered by literary snobs, Southern aristocrats, Yankees, folklorists, down-home folk, and people on either side of the Mason-Dixon."

- Michael Adno, The Bitter Southerner
