U.S. Lawmakers Draft Sanctions On 24 Russians Over 24 Detained Ukrainian Sailors A bipartisan group of U.S. lawmakers dedicated to Ukrainian issues has introduced legislation to sanction members of Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) over their roles in taking 24 Ukrainian crewmen captive last November near the Kerch Strait. In May, the US, Canada, and the EU successfully sanctioned six Russians, including at least 2 FSB officers, and at least half a dozen defense firms. This came the same month Ukraine won a favorable ruling in the Hamburg-based International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, which ordered Russia to release all detained sailors and their vessels.
European Parliament Passes Resolution, Calling on Russia to Release Ukrainian Political Prisoners The European Parliament has adopted a resolution calling on Russia to release Ukrainian citizens illegally sentenced and held in Russian prisons. The resolution includes several practical solutions which may be implemented to prioritize the release of these prisoners, including urging negotiations, put pressure on Russia to establish a negotiation platform focused on humanitarian issues, and urging the European Council to put legal framework in place for imposing personal sanctions.
Moscow Police Detain Dozens Of Supporters Of Crimean Tatars Convicted On Terrorism Charges Activists gathered outside the Supreme Court building in Moscow on July 11th, as the Court began the appeal process for four Crimean Tatars sentenced for charges related to the group Hizb ut-Tahrir. At least 45 of the demonstrators were detained.
