Letters to the Editor
A new feature in our weekly email.
In many communities, a letter to the editor is an important way for citizens to offer a comment, share their perspective, provide an alternative viewpoint. We are starting our own version of a letter to the editor for Calvin.

This week I invite you to read a letter from Calvin member Wayne Kittelson.

Wayne begins “…Pastor Wallace preached a sermon titled, ‘And Who Is My Neighbor’. …[connecting] the parable of the Good Samaritan …to the current situation on our southern border. To add further context to Pastor Wallace’s thoughts, let me present…”

Please click here to read Wayne’s letter. Click here to view the referenced sermon.

In the future, there may be other members who would like to share their viewpoint or comment on a whole host of congregational priorities or concerns. We will share guidelines with you soon.

Classical Concert
Sunday, July 28th | 3:00 pm
Calvin Presbyterian Church is presenting a classical concert on July 28th, at 3:00 pm, featuring David Southorn, former Tigard resident and now an internationally-known violinist; Darlene Cusick, celebrated pianist; and L. William Kuyper, acclaimed French hornist, playing Brahms Trio and other beautiful compositions.

Violinist David Southorn is the Concert Master for the New Haven Connecticut Symphony and the Delaware Symphony Orchestra, and Assistant Concert Master of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra. Based in New York City, Mr. Southorn performs regularly as an extra with the New York Philharmonic Symphony and has been on multiple tours, recently to China, Japan, Taiwan, Vail, and California.

Pianist Darlene Cusick is a frequent solo and collaborative artist. She was chosen as a semi-finalist in the prestigious 2011 Van Cliburn International Amateur Piano Competition held in Fort Worth, Texas. A native of Portland, she has performed as soloist with the Oregon Symphony, under the direction of Norman Leyden in a ten-day concert tour, and at the age of 15 was concert soloist with the Portland Youth Philharmonic. Recently she was soloist with the Vancouver Symphony, performing Cesar Frank’s “Symphonic Variations."

L. William Kuyper, French hornist, was Assistant Principal Hornist with the New York Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra prior to his recent retirement. He has been active both in the United States and abroad as a soloist, clinician, and recording artist. He also appeared regularly with the Philharmonic Ensembles in their acclaimed chamber-music series at Merkin Concert Hall. Mr. Kuyper joined the Philharmonic in 1969 after memberships in both the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C., and the United States Marine Band. While in the Marine Band, he had the distinction of participating in the State funeral service of President John F. Kennedy.

These concerts are supported by your free-will offering. There will be light refreshments following the concert.

Tune in to 89.9 FM All Classical on Thursday, July 25th at 3:00 pm to hear an interview with Bill Kuyper & Darlene Cusick!
Weekly Worship Bulletin and Announcements
We are continuing to explore ways to use the projection screens in worship—liturgy, hymns, images, announcements. As good stewards of creation and our finances, we would like to decrease paper and printing costs. So, instead of using a paper bulletin, please try using the screens.

Important announcements can be received through our weekly email, This Week at Calvin, and the Announcements that scroll before the service.

As a new feature, the weekly bulletin and announcements can be found on the web at sundaysatcalvin.org. You are welcome to use your smartphone or tablet in worship, preview the bulletin, or catch up on announcements throughout the week.

And, of course, should you want or need a paper bulletin and announcements sheet, copies will be available.
Sundays at Calvin
BBQ at Templeton
Tuesday, September 3rd | 4:00 - 6:00 pm
The new Templeton building will open on September 3rd. Please join us helping with the celebration by serving at the Back to School BBQ from 4:00 to 6:30 pm. We need people to help welcome families, grill, serve, and clean up. It’s a wonderful way to meet the families that live right here in our neighborhood. Sign up in the Celebration Center this week after worship, or contact Mark Phifer (marphi.mp@gmail.com) or Jill Hibbs (jhibbs1947@comcast.net) for more information. Background checks will need to be repeated this year. It takes about 2 minutes on line: helpcounter.net/tigardtualatin.

Homeless Ministry Picnic
Wednesday, August 14th | 5:30 pm
Calvin’s Homeless Ministry will host a community picnic on Wednesday, August 14th, 5:30 pm at Woodard Park in Tigard. We hope you will join us to help bring Calvin’s hospitality to people in the community, many of whom have been guests at our Friday Shelter during the winter. Barbequed hot dogs and hamburgers with all the fixings will be provided. Please bring a salad or dessert to share. Email kelcie.anderson@live.com if you need a ride to the picnic. All are welcome!

School Supplies Needed
We will be collecting items from July 14 through August 11.  Please bring #2 pencils, ball point pens, college ruled spiral notebooks. To make things simple, the Mission Committee will bulk order all of the rest of the items this year. If you would like to help with the expenses, please make a note “Backpacks” on your check or donation, and put it into the offering plate or give it to Alice Daniels in the office. Everyone is invited to help stuff the backpacks on Wed., Aug. 14 at 6:30 PM.  Then we'll all have some ice cream to celebrate!
Financial Update
Congregant donations to the general fund (pledges and loose plate offering) are almost 8% below where we anticipated being at the half way mark this year, but this shortfall is almost totally offset by higher than planned Building Use Income. Spending through June is below what was anticipated and is primarily due to timing. We expect to see an uptick in our spending as we head into the fall. Bottom line 😉 (pun intended): We are currently ahead of plan, but are expecting to end the year as planned.

Spending on mission related efforts, from all funds, was almost 10% of total spending.
Announcements & Moments for Mission During Worship
The Music and Worship Committee recently passed new guidelines for Announcements and Moments for Mission at the beginning of the service so that good communication takes place throughout the church and we don't disrupt the flow of the service. Click here to read the guidelines.

Calvin Service Live Stream
If you are unable to join us in person on Sunday morning, join us in spirit. You can watch the service live and also view previous services. Click here for our channel.

New Art Exhibit: Children's Art
We are proud to present “Children’s Art” for the month of August at Calvin Art Gallery. Calvin recently had  a summer camp experience which included a four day art workshop (1.5 hours a day). They explored art printing with tempera paint, rollers and papers, stamping with stamps they made and other items, and collage with papers etc. Thirteen of these works will be on display plus other types of 2D pieces from the Sunday school and works of other children in the community .

The workshop consisted of 13 children aged 7 to 11. They created such beauty by the fusing together of 3 techniques into one fusion of blended beauty. It worked! We feel the teachers were as surprised as the students at how well they grasped the idea and went with it.

The reception for the exhibit is August 4, 2019  directly after church at 11 am - 12 pm. The reception is located in the Inspiration Room adjacent to the front entrance narthex. Come and bring your children, also. All are welcome and there will be cookies!
