Maker Spotlight: Diana Papazian

Diana Papazian of Papazian Jewelry Designs can't sit still and doesn't get much sleep at night because that's when inspiration tends to hit her. There is a little sketching. The few sketches she's attempted in the past look nothing like the final product. Diana's preferred method of designing is to simply play with shapes and colors to create distinct jewelry for any occasion. At Gala, we are excited to feature both her colorful enamel pieces and her "Unearthed Collection" (oxidized sterling silver, copper, and pearl creations).

Diana, who currently resides in Alexandria, VA, was always interested in art, having come from a family of artists. She painted and sculpted throughout her childhood and college. In 2017, she decided to take a leap into jewelry. She was afraid of the torch for years, preferring to rivet her pieces, but...that fear is over now, though she still has a long way to go before she considers herself a master of soldering.

When it comes to her doubled-sided enamel designs, Diana is inspired by nature (ooh, the delightful colors of butterflies and birds!), organic shapes, and architecture. Her love of abstract art reflects itself in the bright mix of colors in her enamel designs and her clients often note that many of her pieces resemble small abstract paintings.

The "Unearthed Collection," on the other hand, explores sterling silver and copper in terms of texture, and has a far more muted color palette. Diana takes the raw materials, hammers, oxidizes, polishes, and seals them to slow down further oxidation...She loves the old, "beat up" look and feel that's timeless, yet simultaneously modern.

And, then, there are the pearls...She wasn't a fan of pearls in the past. These days, however, they are a regular feature of her textured rings, earrings, and pendants, standing out beautifully against oxidized mixed metals in their white brilliance. 

What's next for Diana? Well, more of not sitting still. She is exploring ways of combining her love of  metalwork and enamel,adding pops of color to the generally muted metals. We invite you to stop by Gala and enjoy Diana's unique jewerly designs.
