Hello Hudson Farmers' Market Friends!
Hudson Market Haul This week we’re featuring side-by-side bags from Tom and Kelly— our lovely friends, formerly of the much missed Tin Can Juicery! Here’s the rundown… Blue Star for cherry tomatoes, kale, and eggplant; Martin’s for corn; Happy Belly for a slice of toast topped with sundried tomato hummus, sliced local tomatoes, and other local goodies; ricotta from Billy’s Italian Market; goat feta from Ardith Mae; cucumbers and basil from Bonhomie Farm; apricots from Don Baker Farm; and more!
Keep bringing your reusable bags, baskets, wagons, and carriers to market! We love being able to take pictures week after week, talk with you about where you’re shopping, and encourage everyone else to bring their goodies home in something they can simply bring back.
Weekly Recipe: Vinegar Fridge Beans 2 quarts of rough chopped beans, one green and one purple 1 jalapeño, deseeded and minced 1/2 red onion, chopped 3 cloves of garlic, minced 3 garlic scapes, minced 1 cup of apple cider vinegar 3/4 cup of water coriander, mustard seeds, and peppercorns sea salt to taste
Process Lightly blanche the beans/ once beans are sufficiently cooled, add to a big bowl with all the other ingredients/ mix together, taste, and adjust spices and/or liquids if needed/ pack into a couple lidded mason jars and throw them in the fridge for mellowing
How to Eat and Where to Buy We let our beans marinate overnight in the fridge— these guys can keep for a while, while in the fridge. We used it as a base to recreate one of our favorite mega-Americana side dishes: 3 bean salad! We added slices of tomatoes and radish, green onion, umevinegar for an extra wallop of umami, and some kidney beans.
You can find the green and purplebeans, jalapeño, redonion, scapes, radish, and tomatoes at a number of our vegetable vendors: Blue Star Farm, The Farm at Miller’s Crossing, Sparrowbush Farm, Bonhomie Farm, Red Oak Farm, and Martin Farm. You can find garlic bulbs (possibly this Saturday, definitely next Saturday!) atScarecrow Farm. We ate this alongside lamb sausage from Northern Star Farm, apricots from Don Baker Farm, and corn from Samascott Orchards— all of which we slathered in olive oil and sea salt and placed on the grill. It was incredible!
Market and Community News
This weekend is the last to participate in the Find Waldo Here challenge. This past Saturday we spotted Waldo walking off with a piece of furikake rice crisp from Happy Belly! We’re all interested in where he will end up this weekend. You still have time to grab a passport and start your search! Don’t forget, if you find 20 Waldos scattered throughout town and you are entered in a drawing from the publisher of the series— we hear it’s a perfectly curated gift and a phenomenal closing party.
Since last Sunday was miserably hot and humid, Mike from Bonhomie Farm cancelled the Community Day he had scheduled at the farm. The event will now take place this Sunday, July 28 at his sweet spot in Germantown! Event starts at 9AM and ends at 5PM. Bring along quick hands for all the weeding and transplanting you’ll be helping with. This week he will have artichokes (GET THERE EARLY!), pink celery, Persian and Nokyacucumber, and lots more.
David from Churchtown Garden will be back this weekend with his multi-sized tarts— he’s got big ones, little ones, traditional ones, gluten free ones! All are delicious, balanced, and perfectly crafted. Check out the bluebarb because it will knock your socks off till next week!
Chaseholm Farm will be missing market this week, which means that you will need to wait until NEXT week for your milk, yogurt, and cheese fix!
The bread half of Sparrowbush will be missing from market this weekend! Antione will be teaching a workshop at a bread conference in Maine! Thankfully Ashley will be there with all the vegetables and greens. Some highlights: Datterino variety, Italian plum tomatoes and some cherry tomatoes, both on-the-vine, and some heirlooms. The plums are perfect for grilling, the cherries are perfect for snacking, and heirlooms are perfect for slicing.
Along with cherries, blueberries, and the last of the strawberries, Samascott will have bags of popped corn. Every week we see the faces of kids and adults, smilesbeaming, behind these big bags!
Marilyn at Cedar Flower Farm will have sunflowers, zinnias, lisianthus, and dahlias.
Blue Star Farm will have tomatoes, eggplant, daikonradishes, cucumber, zucchini, squash, and green peppers.
Asia Luna will be back with their beautiful line of soaps and skincare products, plus Paul will be playing the role of bubblemakerfor all the kiddies! Six Acre Wood Farm, a smallscalebiodynamic farm, will be under the Community Tent. And the ever-lovely Abby Lappen will be performing for us this weekend. A farmers market is not truly a farmers market without Abby!
