Don’t let that go to waste

A former GW student is working to change the fact that millions of meals are wasted at restaurants while also helping college students get cheap meals. Last Call For Food, which currently has four Foggy Bottom restaurants on board, allows restaurants to sell leftover meals for around $5, helping divert waste from landfills.  

 

Not quite a bullet train

The announcement that Amtrak will launch a nonstop Acela train between D.C. and New York was exciting news for frequent travelers, but the reality is it’s only 15-20 minutes faster. And we’re still talking about a $130+ train. Looks like the main goal was to make more space on the regular Acela, not so much to add an “express” line.

Despite the pervasive (and still somewhat true) narrative that the DC Council is starting to show a schism between newer more progressive members and an old guard, the reality is much more complicated. Did you know DC hosts a yearly pro tennis tournament in Rock Creek Park? The Citi Open is now in its 50th year, and will run from this Saturday through August 4th.

Pleasant Library features activists and academics talking about the “Washington’s most diverse and multicultural neighborhood during the 70s, 80s and 90s,” including grassroots efforts against gentrification that led to co-ops, anti-speculation taxes, and even political office. (Sunday, 1 pm)
