This week's REFLECTION
'Grace' by Eric Enstrom (1875-1968)

THIS WEEK'S READINGS
Genesis 18.10-32
· Colossians 2.6-15 · Psalm 52 · Luke 11. 1-13

'...everyone who asks receives' Luke 11:10

Today’s passage reflects Luke’s take on Jesus’ teaching about prayer. What emerges clearly is that Jesus expects his disciples to pray with boldness, trusting God to take care of their daily needs. The disciples clearly sense that there is something about the way Jesus prays to the Father that they need to inhabit for themselves. The ‘model’ prayer he gives them is fairly unremarkable, full of phrases familiar to any pious Jew. The teaching that follows stresses the need for persistence. The friend at midnight who at first refuses to provide food for an unexpected visitor stands here for our constant experiences of setback in prayer; our projections onto God of our own impatience and lack of compassion. We are not born trusting God; trust has to be discovered and learnt, and we are to persist in spite of any damage to our image of God that arises from past experience or wounded memories.

God is not like the friend at midnight; yet we may sometimes feel abandoned and that our requests are not heard. Praying with persistence requires discipline and courage. Our spiritual muscles need developing and exercising before we can rely on them to carry us through barren times. Once again, Jesus prepares the disciples for his passion. To interpret his suffering, and the suffering they themselves will endure, requires the consoling gift of the Holy Spirit.

Carolyn to become Churchwarden

Carolyn Hallett has accepted our Rector's  invitation to become our second Churchwarden. Carolyn is a long-standing member of Holy Trinity, is a key part of our Events team, is closely involved with the Awareness Foundation (founded at Holy Trinity Church 15 years ago) and lives locally.

Writes Fr. Nicholas: "We have been without two Churchwardens since Caroline Watts left us in January to move to Hampton and we are grateful to Jeffrey Kabel for having taken on the extra responsibilities for so long. Please pray for Carolyn as she takes up the role this year and for our excellent team of church officers as together we work for the Kingdom of God in this place."

Prize-winning gardeners scoop awards

Holy Trinity gardeners performed well in this year's Chelsea Gardens Guild awards.

On Monday (July 22), the Mayor of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, Cllr. Will Pascall, presented Gogo-Rose Ilo, the creator of our church's Patio Garden, with two certificates and two cups having won 2nd prize in the Winter Competition, 2nd prize in the Spring Competition and 1st prize in the Summer Competition in the Tubs and Containers category for which she was given the Illingworth Cup.

There was a certificate for Lesley and Stephanie Dawes, members of the congregation, for their own patio garden at their home in Kensington.

Green-fingered ordinand will help us to grow

At the end of August we will be welcoming on placement Michael Stewart, who is training for the priesthood at Ripon College, Cuddesdon. Michael will be with us for a month and taking part in the life of our parish day by day. It will be an excellent opportunity for him to learn about church life in central London and for us to learn from him about dedicating our lives to the service of God's Kingdom.

Michael is 32-years-old and is originally from the town of Nuneaton in Warwickshire. He married Kirsty last July and  they have a one year old dog call Freddie.

Michael was a professional gardener, a passion which began in his early teens when he got an allotment . After working in administration for the NHS for a number of years, Michael got a job as an under gardener at Arbury Hall Estate. After working there for just over a year he was lucky enough to be selected as one of the three people to be awarded a three-year traineeship with the Professional Gardeners' Guild. This allowed him to spend a year working in some of the most prestigious gardens in the country, alongside and learning from some of the top talent in the horticultural industry. During this time Michael worked at The Garden House in Devon, Waddesdon Manor in Buckinghamshire and Highgrove House in Gloucestershire. On completing his training Michael had a short period as Head Gardener at Piers Court a private estate in Gloucestershire, before moving to be Senior Gardener at Grimshaw Hall in Warwickshire.

After a very successful four years of garden restoration Michael moved on to become Estate and Gardens Manager at Hampton Lucy House before entering full time theological training at Ripon College Cuddesdon in September 2018.

Visit to the Arts and Crafts home in Hammersmith

Emery Walker's House, which was a private home until 1999, has the most complete and authentic Arts & Crafts interiors in the UK.

The house includes handblocked Morris & Co Wallpaper and textiles and Philip Webb furniture.

The tall, terraced house on the River Thames at Hammersmith was home to the printer Emery Walker, friend and mentor to William Morris. The decoration and furnishings are preserved as they were in his lifetime.

The decoration at 7 Hammersmith Terrace today is typical of the homes of many of the key figures in the Arts and Crafts movement.

The combination of Morris & Co textiles, wallpapers and furniture, 17th- and 18th-century furniture, and Middle Eastern and North African textiles and ceramics is similar to that which decorated William Morris's own house.

Join our parish visit sponsored by our Arts and Crafts Committee on Saturday 28 September 2019 departing Holy Trinity Church at 9.30am. Tickets, which include a guided tour, cost £12.50. Contact our Parish Administrator to book your place: parishoffice@sloanechurch.org

An hour with Marta

Come to a marvellous free concert on Sunday 25 August at 3pm for an hour with the Argentinian-American pianist Marta Felcman who once studied in London with Peter Katin.

Marta is renowned for a vast repertoire that ranges from Bach to Rorem and includes composers from her native Argentina. Her concerts are ambitious, exciting, and revelatory. “A major artist!” proclaims Laurence Vittes, music critic of Gramophone Magazine. “A pianist of the “greatest musical sophistication,” wrote The Washington Post. “One of the finest recitals in this writer’s memory...Power and dexterity...pure musical enjoyment,” reported The Richmond (VA) Times-Dispatch. Il Tempo in Rome praised her performance as “...brilliant and poetic! The concert ended with tumultuous applause."

News from THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND

A lasting difference

The Church of England has launched a short film entitled ‘A Lasting Difference’ explaining how gifts in wills can help to transform the lives of our local churches and communities. This short film features three inspiring case studies from parish churches where gifts have enabled amazing opportunities for mission - from new church halls, to hiring a youth worker and improving disabled access: bit.ly/2OjkcPH

Once you have made provision for your loved ones, you have the opportunity to make a lasting gift to God, by leaving a legacy to His church. Leaving a gift in your Will to your local church is one of the most valuable and lasting ways you can continue to support the mission and ministry in your community.

A gift can be an expression of your gratitude and thanksgiving towards God, and can help keep your local church alive, and help transform its future.

For many churches, regular giving is absorbed in ‘keeping the show on the road’. This usually involves everyday activities such as paying the parish share, insuring and heating the building and repairing the roof.

A gift from your estate is different. Many churches have a legacy policy stating that they will not use legacy gifts for everyday expenditure; the PCC will spend your gift on a special project to make a difference.

For example, a gift in your Will could support your church’s ministry to young people, refurbish the kitchen, support an overseas mission partner, help to reorder the church, preserve their historic church bells or equip the church with new Bibles.

No matter how large or small, each gift can make a significant impact on our mission and ministry, and maintaining our spiritual heritage.

Please consider how a gift in your Will could help the Church meet the needs of future generations.
