Overview of the ASV  Summer Program

The 2019 edition of the ASV Summer Program has finished. Our coordination team is happy to see how more than 600 children have participated and enjoyed an activity promoting language learning, creativity, curiosity, and openness to other values.

The Summer Program is based on the ASV teaching methods and places special emphasis on oral communication, collaborative learning and the use of language in different contexts. Class routines and workbooks are adapted to each age but all of the students take art workshops, outdoor activities, swimming sessions and off-campus trips. Elementary and Secondary groups prepared presentations for their families on this past Wednesday during the Celebration of Learning Day,  while children in Preschool classes offered a lovely music festival on Thursday.

As usual, this Summer Program had a large number of local students coming to ASV to improve in English, but it is also significant the increase of international families visiting Valencia in July and choosing our program as a summer activity for their children. Thank you!

The Mayor of Puçol Visited ASV

Ms. Paz Carceller, the new Mayor of Puçol, visited ASV on July 19, 2019 to take part in an assembly in which the ASV Foundation Summer scholarships were granted. The event was held at 15:00 and, in addition to Ms. Carceller, Mr. José María Esteve, Counselor of Education; Mr. Francisco Estela, Vice President of the ASV Board of Governors and ASV Foundation; Mr. Michael L. Smith, ASV Director; and Ms. Felicitas Berazay, the ASV Summer Program Coordinator.

Ms. Carceller highlighted the benefits of learning world languages in summer and mentioned with some joy that when she was at school she also participated in the ASV Summer Program.

On behalf of the ASV Foundation, congratulations to all of the students and families who had an opportunity to attend the ASV Summer Program as a result of the ASV Foundation’s activities.

Welcome to the ASV community, a vibrant and open community that has welcomed new families, like you, since 1980.  As you begin your journey at ASV, new families of students joining for the first time in 2019-2020 should  keep in mind the following dates, times and procedures:

We look forward to welcoming you personally to ASV in September 2019.

ASV Atrium Renovations

The renovation of the ASV Atrium began in earnest on June 24, 2019 to dramatically improve the functionality and appearance of the space.   The renovations are progressing well and are on schedule.  We look forward to seeing the faces of our students and families as they enter the newly renovated space on September 9, 2019.  In the meantime, enjoy these few pictures of the “before” and “during” renovation process.

Implementation of the New ASV PE Uniform

The new Physical Education (PE) uniform was presented in June 2018 and will be compulsory for all PE lessons as of September 2019. Therefore, students in Elementary School, Middle School, and Grades 9 and 10 are required to attend PE classes dressed in the new school PE uniform when the 2019-2020 academic year begins on Monday, September 9, 2019.

As you may know there is detailed information on the PE uniform on this section of the ASV website. The PE uniform can be purchased online through Svelto, our partner for athletic attire. A new feature this year is the implementation of a new payment method using credit cards. Orders will be delivered to the home address provided within five (5) working days after confirmation. Svuelto will not close during the month of August and are happy to attend to all orders.

Health and Diet Issues

Please contact Ms. Inma Requena, our School Nurse,  for any message or communication involving health and diet issues. Remember that families of students promoted to Grade 1, Grade 7 or Grade 11 must submit the official medical certificate provided at their public health center, as these grade levels are considered new stages and it is compulsory for schools to have an updated health document.

Excellence Scholarship for Alejandra Planells (Class of 2019 Salutatorian)

We are pleased to announce that the Salutatorian of the Class of 2019 and former student, Alejandra Planells Devesa, has received an excellence scholarship to study Biotechnology at the Universidad Católica de Valencia. Alejandra and 24 other future UCV students receiving this type of scholarships attended a ceremony on July 1, 2019 as part of their first steps in preparing for the 2019-2020 academic year.

Alejandra has considered studying Biotechnology for quite some time, and  she has been engaged with Life Sciences, Genetics, and any course involving lab work. A family member recently “studied that same degree and loved it, so I was more convinced to take it”, Alejandra described in an email to our communications team.

Our best wishes for Alejandra in this new stage.

Thumbs up for our High School Summer Program Volunteers

American School of Valencia has an additional resource improving the learning experience and offering a different reference to our summer students: the ASV High School Summer Program Volunteers.

Twenty-seven students in Grades 8, 9, 10 and 11 have served as volunteers in the ASV Summer Program 2019. A large group stayed two weeks, others the whole month, but they unanimously agreed that the experience has been fun and rewarding, while also provided a better insight into international education.  Summer Proggram Volunteers had the following to say:

"I've had a great time working with the youngest children." - Aryna C.
"It is a good idea to dedicate part of the vacation to this experience" - Jaime B.
"I've learned a lot and I've taken care of the little ones" - Carmen B.
"It is not as easy as it looks!" - Blanca S.
"I want to go back next year." - Rodrigo R.

We appreciate our Summer Program Volunteeer’s enthusiasm and wish to thank all of them profusely for giving their time, energy and dedication to supporting other students.  Come back in July 2020!

ASV Students Taking DELF Exams Passed

ASV students in Middle School or High School taking French have a convenient way to earn the official Diplôme d'Etudes en Langue Française (DELF) certificate at the French Institute located in Carrer Moro Zeit, Valencia. All ASV candidates taking the latest DELF examination  in June 2019 have passed and will receive a language level certificate.

DELF is an official test organized by the Ministry of Education of France open to non-French speakers who wants to acreditate their communication skills using this language. The junior test is special version for Middle School and High School students who learn French as a second world language.

Starting in the 2019-2020 academic year, American School of Valencia is offering specific preparation to take the DELF exams; the DELF Preparation course will be an after school activity, part of the ASV+ extracurricular program, aimed to guide students to obtain the B1 or B2 certificates. Classes will be led by the ASV World Languages Coordinator, Ms. Elena Martí, from October 2019 to January 2020 or from February to May 2020 depending on when the student is interested in taking the DELF exam.

Materials Lists and Information for Middle School (Grades 6-8)

In order to enable our Middle School (Grades 6-8) students to feel well-prepared for the 2019-2020 Academic Year,  we have prepared a list of recommended school supplies. There is no reason to have everything for the first day; however, the first few days are for settling in and individual teachers will be available to help with advice if necessary.

It is expected that by Grade 6, students should have the maturity and to accept the responsibility of preparing themselves for the beginning of the academic year.  For this reason, the Materials and Supply List is predominantly in English, and Middle School students should find the list easy to understand and the items easy to identify. However, students are encouraged to contact Ms. Castro (isabelcastro@asvalencia.org), the Middle School Assistant Principal,  if students have any specific questions not addressed  in the Materials and Supply List:

Recommended School Supplies List - Grade 6
Recommended School Supplies List - Grades 7 and 8

Grade 6 will be excited to start Middle School in September 2019. We have prepared a welcome letter for students outlining the basic instructions for the first day.

Welcome Letter for Grade 6 Students

There will be a transition meeting for parents of Grade 6 students on September 27, 2019. Full details of this meeting will be provided in September 2019; however, families are encouraged to add this meeting date to their calendars now.

Materials for High School (Grades 9-12)

We expect that High School students have developed an organizational system that works best for them and that they will come prepared with the materials that they prefer. However, there is a basic list of useful supplies to start the academic year, which can be accessed here. Teachers will communicate any other specific material needed for the teach they take on the first day of classes.

Athletics and ASV+

ASV+ Registration

The ASV+ enrollment process for the upcoming 2019-2020, ASV’s official  extracurricular program, is still ongoing and spots in some activities are already at capacity.  ASV+ registrations will be closed from July 27 to September 2, 2019 due to the summer holidays but, as of September 3, 2019 new students may enroll if there are available spots in the activities they choose. It is also possible to change to a different activity based on space availability..

Activities for Grades 11 and 12

Students in Grades 11 and 12 will receive a specific communication for their activities as the high school schedule will now allow students in these grade levels to participate in ASV+.  By August 30, 2019, Ms. Escarlata Casas will send an email announcing the available activities, the registration period and specific conditions applied to students in Grades 11 and 12.

Congratulations to Coach Gómez

A member of the ASV Athletic Department -Raúl Gómez- has recently participated in the European Under 21 Field Hockey Championship as assistant coach of the women's team led by Mr. Jordi Alastrue. Spain qualified for the final game and beat The Netherlands by winning the shoot outs after finishing 1-1 the regular time. Congratulations to coach Gómez because this is not his first achievement as assistant coach of the senior and the U21 national teams.
