GIM-HSR faculty Maria Han, Daniel Croymans, Christine Lam, and David Ganz presented at the quarterly GIM-HSR Division meeting on Monday, July 29th.  The topic was outpatient quality initiatives for the new academic year. Dr. Carolyn Crandall was awarded the NAMS/Lippincott Williams & Wilkins Menopause journal Best Paper Award for her article "Breast cancer, endometrial cancer, and cardiovascular events in participants who used vaginal estrogen in the Women's Health Initiative Observational Study"  The award will be acknowledged at the NAMS Annual Meeting in Chicago on September 26.
 

Dr. Arleen Brown was selected as a recipient of an inaugural Chancellor’s Award for Community-Engaged Research.  This award funds courses where students will carry out research activities benefiting local community organizations while advancing their professor’s research goals. Dr. Brown’s students will work with community organizations and academic faculty to reduce chronic disease disparities in Los Angeles County through community-engaged collaborative projects.

A new National Bureau of Economic Research report, "Medicaid and Mortality: New Evidence from Linked Survey and Administrative Data," on which Dr. Laura Wherry was an author, regarding the life saving effects of Medicaid expansion, was cited by a Vox article  (and tweeted out by Barack Obama). Dr. Wherry was also interviewed regarding the report's findings for a Wall Street Journal piece, "When the Safety Net Pays for Itself":  “[The study] clearly shows that government programs that are targeted to low-income children are a smart investment.”


Dr. Joseph Ladapo provided commentary for a MedPage Today article "Does Myocardial Ischemia Matter in Stable CAD?" looking at a new JAMA Internal Medicine investigation, "Association Between Stress Testing–Induced Myocardial Ischemia and Clinical Events in Patients With Multivessel Coronary Artery Disease?"  He notes, "Ultimately, patients with established coronary disease need to be on preventative medications, eat healthier, exercise more, and stop smoking regardless of whether they have documented ischemia."

Communities for Wellness Equity (C4WE): Community Voices 

Continuing the legacy of Dr. Loretta Jones, on July 12^th, 2019, Healthy African American Families II (HAAF) and the National Clinician Scholars Cohort of 2018-2020 hosted a community partnered conference co-sponsored by the CTSI Community Engagement and Research Program (CERP) at the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Mall. 

With over 175 South Los Angeles community members, policy, and academic stakeholders voices were heard regarding the facilitators and challenges of social determinants of health impacting community.  Participants identified priority issues for which action-oriented work groups will be formed to address housing, education, violence & trauma/safety, and nutrition & food security.  Recap video here.
