Summer Holiday for Sausalito Currents

With the City Council on an extended break, August is typically a slow time for news from the City of Sausalito. City offices and the Sausalito Library will be open for regular hours in August, but Sausalito Currents will be taking a couple of weeks off. Barring a major news event, the next edition of Currents will be published on Friday, August 16. The next meeting of the City Council will be held on Tuesday, August 27.

Visioning Workshop for the Marinship on September 7

Marinship
The City of Sausalito is currently preparing an update to the General Plan. The General Plan sets a long-range vision for the community and provides direction on a range of issues that affect the City and will affect the City for the next 20 years and beyond. The span of issues for which a general plan provides guidance include environmental and economic sustainability, community character, pedestrian and bicycle safety, vehicular circulation, and many more issues that affect the day-to-day lives of Sausalitans.

As part of this process, the City will host a community visioning workshop focused specifically on the long-term vision for the Marinship district. The workshop will take place at the Spinnaker Restaurant from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 7. Coffee and pastries will be provided.

The workshop is designed for Sausalito residents and workers to give their input on what long-range vision should be pursued for the Marinship, including maritime, artistic, and industrial uses. Attendees will participate in collaborative and individual activities, listen to a panel discussion, and discuss their vision for the Marinship with other community members.

For more information, visit sausalitogeneralplan.org or contact info@sausalitogeneralplan.org. The Spinnaker Restaurant is located at 100 Spinnaker Drive in downtown Sausalito.

King Tides in Late July and Early August

King Tides
King tides predicted between July 29 and August 3
During the week of July 29, Sausalito will have a new moon and the Earth will be near its aphelion, or farthest point from the sun. The combination of these two factors will result in especially high tides, sometimes referred to as "king tides." King tides that exceed 6.5' can cause street flooding in Sausalito, most often on Gate 5 Road.

High tides exceeding 6.5' are predicted on the following days:
  • Monday, July 29 at 10:00 p.m.
  • Tuesday, July 30 at 10:50 p.m.
  • Wednesday, July 31 at 11:40 p.m.
  • Friday, August 2 at 12:31 a.m.
  • Saturday, August 3 at 1:23 a.m.
Wind can increase tide heights and inundation areas, especially if it is coming from the south.

Staff from Sausalito Public Works, the Sausalito Police Department, and Southern Marin Fire will monitor flood zones on each of these days and place "flooded" signs in the areas that are usually affected by king tides. As a proactive measure, Caltrans will also be closing the lower half of the Manzanita Park and Ride Lot just north of Sausalito from Friday, July 26 until Sunday, August 4.

Public Works. Edwards Avenue will be closed between 127 Edwards and Marion Avenue from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 31. There may also be a closure for part of the day on Thursday, August 1, beginning at 8:00 a.m. The closure is due to the installation of a sanitary sewer lateral for the new residences at 60 and 62 Marion. Construction will cut off return access to Hi Vista Road, Marion Avenue, the portion of South Street contiguous with Marion Avenue, and the one-way section of Edwards south of its intersection with Marion. If you live on these streets, you will be able to drive out of the area to Alexander Avenue at any time during construction but won't be able to return until Edwards is reopened. The contractor for the project, Tim Grogan, will be placing door hangers or otherwise reaching out to properties that will be affected by the road closure.

Administration. If there is a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) event in Marin, the Marin Municipal Water District asks all customers to suspend irrigation and restrict water use to indoors-only for the duration of the power shutoff. The water district relies on electric power to treat and distribute water. During a PSPS event, the district will make every effort to provide continuous water service. By curtailing water use during a shutoff, you can help ensure more water is available for essential uses such as firefighting.
