City Workers Unite for a Fair Contract,
Mediation Update, and Free Tickets to Art & Soul!
Local 21 Members Continue to
Push City Council for a Good Contract


In the last few weeks, Local 21 members have been busy working to pressure City Council members to fairly compensate us and bargain in good faith. 
 
We spoke during Open Comment before Council Sessions, met with Council Members individually, and took time out of our Saturdays to attend District community events.
 
At Council Member Dan Kalb’s community event, Local 21 member Miriam Mehari questioned Kalb on why City Council continues to unnecessarily tighten the belt on city workers when Oakland’s economy is thriving.
 
Local 21 member and District 1 resident David Moore explained to Councilmember Kalb that Oakland's Tree Services team is half-staffed. Fire season is upon us, and the high amount of dry vegetation already puts Oakland at risk. An understaffed Tree Services team further exacerbates Oakland's fire safety concerns. The City is struggling to fill vacant positions in many departments because our wages are not competitive enough.
 
We’re sending a message to the City of Oakland: city workers are united in our fight to invest in city services, fully staff our workforce, and win a fair contract! 
Mediation Update
On Tuesday, July 23, we had our first mediation session with the City and a neutral mediator. The Local 21 bargaining team made opening remarks and shared powerful personal stories on how the City’s understaffing problem and uncompetitive wages impact the services that city workers provide. Our next mediation session is scheduled for Monday, July 29.
