Volunteers will tell you that they don’t volunteer to be recognized. And that’s true for Julio Juarez and Alex Gabaldon, who received the honor of Volunteer of the Year at our Volunteer Appreciation picnic on a Saturday afternoon in late June.
Julio Juarez arrives at the Shelter bright and early every Friday morning to sort clothes and shoes and get them ready for when the Community Closet opens at 9:00 a.m. Working with the other Friday morning volunteers, he organizes piles of donated items to help the guests find what they need. Julio has been cheerfully volunteering at Pete’s Place for over two years. “He greets me with a big smile,” Sue Carr, Volunteer Coordinator, said, “and an even bigger hug!”
It has been over seven years since Alex Gabaldon arrived at the Interfaith Community Shelter to volunteer. He finds a world of fulfillment greeting guests and helping with check-in every Tuesday evening during the Winter Shelter season. Alex eventually became the Core Team Leader on Tuesdays and often subs on other nights. “He’s dependable,” Sue said, “and the Team knows that when Alex is volunteering, things will be taken care of!”
Volunteers are a vital component at Pete’s Place, providing thousands of hours of service. Last year alone, almost 2,000 volunteers selflessly worked over 15,000 hours helping in the kitchen, during resource days, or during check-in times for our guests.
