FUND RESEARCH, FIND A CURE

An update from Cancer in Kids @ RCH
August 2019

WHAT HAPPENS TO THE FUNDS RAISED BY CIKA?

CIKA's major commitment is to the Translational Research Centre in Paediatric Solid Tumours which was established in 2012 and to the Tissue Bank which commenced sample collection in 2014. CIKA’s initial commitment to the Translational Research Centre was $520,000 over three years, 2013-2016.
CIKA then committed additional funding of $115,000 to cover the cost of establishing an out of hours roster for tissue collection. In 2016, CIKA committed to another $500,000 of funding for the tissue bank. The total funds invested by CIKA in just this project since 2013 are $1.2 million.

As a supporter of CIKA, you can feel justly proud of what Is being achieved.
If you would like to know more about past and current research supported by CIKA you can visit the research section on our web page.

CIKA committee members meet regularly to plan fundraising events and consider research proposals for funding.

A SUCCESSFUL FOCUS LUNCHEON

Focus and CIKA members came together at the Craigieburn Highlands Hotel in June to enjoy fellowship, raffles, and a fabulous meal, and to reflect on Lesley who initiated this annual fundraiser. This was the first luncheon for 2019, but it certainly won’t be the last. Book now for the October 11 event at the Gisborne Golf Club when RCH Tissue Bank Coordinator, Louise Ludlow, will be the special guest.
As usual, a good time was had by all those fortunate enough to attend. Focus chair, Robyn (left), is seen here with two other Focus members.

BEANIE BONANZA

Spurred on by her success in selling beanies at her school, Shelford Girls’ Grammar in March, Tia, the granddaughter of CIKA supporter Mira, held another two-day sale of beanies and scarves at her school. This fundraising activity was embraced by students and teachers alike. Well done Tia for raising over $350 for CIKA. We are proud of the support that you and your grandmother give

THANK YOU LUCIA

A big thank you to our wonderful Lucia (RCH Auxiliaries Administration Officer) who went well beyond her job desciption when she shared with us the joy of Italian cooking. Thank you to Rachelle for hosting the day, to Kerry for being the photographer and to Duyvos cooking concepts for providing the delicious desserts. Another fabulous CIKA fundraiser!

BRILLIANT BENDIGO

Tickets are selling fast for Step into Spring, a much anticipated event being held on September 14 at Strathdale and featuring High Tea and Craft Stalls.  Follow the Step into Spring link above to go to the CIKA webpage to find the flyer and booking details.  Alternatively, contact Ruth Edelsten on 0409 864 709 or by email to jorue@bigpond.com
CIKA bears are on sale at the Symonds Street Cafe in Golden Square.  Thank you again to Trudy Cook for her support.
Like her mother, Trudy from the Symonds Street Cafe in Bendigo, Rachel has been busy fundraising for CIKA at Goodstart Early Learning where she works. A busy mum of two beautiful little girls she found the time to raise $160 selling beanies and now she is getting great sales selling educational wooden toys at the centre.

WINTER MARKET STALL

Each year, the RCH holds a winter market in the foyer, “Main Street”. This year’s market took place on Wednesday June 26, and, as usual, Pam Phillips and her long-time helpers, Lois and Ann were there to set up their stall laden with goodies, including an array of unique handmade knitwear, dresses and jackets, fabulous hand knitted clowns and an range of toys. It was a very hectic day for everyone. Well done!

CIKA values most highly the work done by Pam and her team, and by the many others who donate goods for sale and thus contribute to the support that we provide for research at the RCH.
