News from GDS Church

We are delighted to welcome you to our morning service in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. If you are a visitor, please make yourself known to the welcome team or the minister.

This Sunday, the service will be lead by our Minister Peter Barber & our Assistant to the Minsiter Trevor Martindale, supported by the worship team, where we will continue our sermon series asking "Pursuing God's rest."

The scripture reading is from Isaiah 40:12-31.

Events for your diary

29th July - 2nd August, 10am - 1:15pm. Seaside JAM Holiday Club in GDS Gorgie:
Following on from the success of Jungle JAM last year, our Summer Holiday Club returns in 2019 for children in P1-P7. Expect lots of seaside related fun, games, songs, crafts, drama and puppets as we seek to show the children of Gorgie, Dalry and Stenhouse the love of Jesus and share with them the Good News. If you have primary aged children and would like them to participate, please speak to our Children & Families Outreach Worker, Rachel Cooney after the service, send her an email  at youth@gdschurch.org.uk or fill out one of the sign-up forms which you can find on the table at the back of the church.

Thurs. 1st August, 7pm. Holiday Club Parents/Carers/Guests Celebration in GDS Gorgie
An evening of refreshments, songs, drama, prayer, team sharing and a celebration of the children’s artwork from our Seaside Jam Holiday Club! All are welcome from our church congregation! Contact Rachel for more information by email youth@gdschurch.org.uk

Friday 2nd August, 5:30pm. Community Meal & LA Philharmonic Orchestra Concert at Tynecastle Stadium
GDS Church will be partnering with Edinburgh City Mission (ECM) by hosting a meal in the main hall of the church building in Gorgie at 5:30 pm prior to the opening event of the Edinburgh International Festival at Tyncastle Stadium at 7 pm.  The purpose of the event is to demonstrate generosity towards people from deprived communities across the city, to show the love of Christ by providing a meal and getting to know some of those who benefit from the Basics Bank programme that ECM runs in local communities.

Information of note

Youth Group Leaders:
Creche (Yellow Lanyards) - Gordon and Leeanne
Mini-JAM (Red Lanyards) - Rachel
JAM Club (Red Lanyards) - Netia and Bina
CIA (Green Lanyards) - Gill

JAM Club Children:
We invite the children to sit in the front row of the church, on the piano side, with our Youth Group Leaders each Sunday. We welcome any visiting children to join us at the front and to come through for activities in the Large Hall! Please speak with our Youth, Children and Families Worker, Rachel, if you are visiting!

Mini JAM:
Mini-JAM will now be running for those aged 2-5 in the Count Room.  Leaders will be wearing Red Lanyards.  There will be Bible stories, songs, games and other exciting activities.  Please speak with Dandan or contact Rachel for more information or if you have any questions; youth@gdschurch.org.uk.

GDS Diadem Just Giving Page:
We are now in the process of making GDS Diadem ready to host the Shelter for years to come. The most important improvement that the facilities at Diadem require is an upgrade of the kitchen to a commercial kitchen standard. This will make preparing meals for up to 75 sleepers each night far easier for the many volunteer catering teams. In order to start fundraising for this project, Susan Kay has kindly set up a Just Giving page. If you would like to support the project to turn GDS Diadem into a home for the Care Shelter in a financial way, please consider donating via this page. www.justgiving.com/campaign/diadem

Summer at Saltyard:
Please note that, from 2nd July to the 10th August, Saltyard will be open from 10am-4pm each day, rather than the usual 9-5 on weekdays. In previous years, Saltyard has closed for a Summer Break. This year we have decided to stay open all through the Summer, so please come and enjoy the café with your friends and family. Also, if you have ever thought about volunteering at Saltyard, there’s no better time to give it a try! The Team would really value a few extra willing hands to help cover staff holidays over the Summer.

Claire Diedhou (Orr) Newsletter:
The July edition of Claire’s monthly newsletter is now available at the back of the church.

Holiday Club Support:
As you will already know, we are running a Summer Holiday Club again this year for primary aged children. As ever, we like to offer this as a free club for any local children to attend. Therefore, any support that you feel you could offer to help facilitate the Holiday Club would be gratefully received. There are a number of ways you could help:
-    A financial donation to help cover costs and to enable us to keep the Holiday Clubs free for all.
-    Donation of craft items and resources or any seaside-themed decorations.
-    Prayer support is essential, please pray for smooth running of the Holiday Club, for the team and their preparations, and that the children will encounter Jesus.
-    Volunteering your time. Although we have a team of leaders, helpers are always appreciated on the door, with the crafts or in the kitchen.

Change of date.
Will elders please note that the date of the next meeting of the Kirk Session will be Tuesday 17th September. At our last meeting we put 27th August in our diaries but you can now make other plans for that evening!
Only the date has changed, the time and place remain the same - 7.30pm in the small hall at GDS Gorgie. Apologies for any inconvenience caused, Tricia.
