Hi <<First Name>>,

The House has left for the August recess and the Senate will follow soon. This newsletter will take a break until Congress returns on Sep. 9. However, we will still send reminders of important events, including the Aug. 10 Montgomery County Grassroots 2019 Campaign Kickoff picnic at Wheaton Regional Park (more information below) and the Kensington Labor Day parade on Sep. 2, where Indivisible Montgomery will march as we have the past two years (details to follow).

Last week's message, where I suggested that we should all vote and support the Democratic candidate each of us wants to win, instead of guessing at who we think can win the general election, generated the most conversation since we were working against Obamacare repeal in 2017. Thank you! We need to work through these issues as we get closer to voting (187 days until the Iowa Caucuses, 274 days until the Maryland primary).

Of course, deciding on the best candidate means watching the Democratic debates! The next set of debates are on Tuesday, July 30, and Wednesday, July 31. There are a few watch parties around the area.

We have an impeachment inquiry, kind of! On Friday, House Judiciary chairman Jerry Nadler announced his committee was suing the Trump administration for materials that would help them consider articles of impeachment against the president. And that's it. Rather than a big announcement or a vote in the House, we learn that Democrats will consider impeaching President Trump through court filings and an article in The Atlantic.

Indivisible Montgomery has argued the public nature of impeachment hearings will ensure the American public understands the corruption and criminality of the Trump administration. So is Nadler's approach a good one? Greg Sargent of The Washington Post thinks it is savvy. Quinta Jurecic writing in The Atlantic, however, says the Democrats are forfeiting the moral clarity of impeachment with their understated, muddled messaging.

I tend to think the latter interpretation is correct, but it doesn't much change our work. We are in the midst of a surge of members of Congress declaring support for launching an impeachment inquiry. Notably, Rep. Raskin is the only member of the Maryland delegation to publicly support the investigation. We still have a lot of work to do.

JOIN US on Aug. 10 at the Montgomery County Grassroots 2019 Campaign Kickoff at Wheaton Regional Park, Pavilion B, beginning at 11am.

We will gather for a bring-your-own-picnic event at the park with activities for getting involved in the 2019 elections in North Carolina, Virginia, Kentucky and elsewhere, including
  • Voter registration letter writing
  • Canvassing 101
  • And a photo booth for sharing why you fight.
Co-hosting the event with us are Do The Most Good MoCo, JWalkers Action Group, MoCo WoMen, Progressive Action Montgomery County, Women's Alliance for Democracy & Justice and the Women's Democratic Club.
