Teen Sexting: Risky

Behavior or Normative

Expression?

The current dialog on teen sexting is just the latest iteration of mixed messages for kids.  Few would disagree that sexting has become more prevalent in recent years, and teens are certainly no exception to this. It's no surprise then that this is "the fastest growing concern" among experts. Dr. Michele Drouin, an expert on technology and relationships clearly articulates why, “What you have here is a perfect storm of budding sexuality combined with a child’s first freedom on their own technological device. On top of all that, this budding sexuality happens well before the prefrontal cortex—the part of the brain responsible for impulse control—is fully developed.”

Given this context, the commonsense approach would seem to be: have clear communication, understand why kids are sexting in the first place, and make them aware of not only the legal ramifications of it, but also the social and emotional toll it can take as well. It seems incredulous that instead, the response of some is to help teens "learn skills to make [their] own decisions about sexting," and see it as "a way for young people to express their affection and desire for each other without putting themselves at physical risk, as long as they feel like they’re in a safe and trusting relationship when they do it.” While acknowledging that there are some risks associated with sexting, the article goes on to infer that it's really more about consent, “We’ve really managed to evolve our conversations around consent and I think we need to do the same thing about sexting.”

Don't our young people deserve better than this? Instead of once again showing them how to make a risky behavior "safer," why aren't we setting the bar a little higher and as adults, with fully developed brains, providing the healthier direction they need and giving them the life-long skills for impulse control that has wide-reaching implications not just for the teen years, but for the rest of their lives?

The Ripple Effect of Technology

We are constantly bombarded with stories about the negative effects of technology on kids. While both overuse and misuse are definitely very real problems, what kids post can prove toxic as well. Help your kids navigate this by establishing rules, setting boundaries, and making it very clear that everything they view and every time they text or post on social media they are creating a ripple and affecting everyone around them for better or for worse. Teach them to slow down and be authentic in "real life" and online.
