Gridded after Jane Szabo’s series “Sense of Self: Gridding the Space”
Behind these lines
I am moving, tossing
my body, Havishamed
into this aerie, a latticed attic
of my making. That’s it,
of course, of my making.
A cage, slitted just so,
a screen so that my face,
turned, can brood behind.
I am wallpapered in.
I am almost built into
a post, left for luck
to haunt a building, genius loci, djinn, haint.
Go-going behind
these bars, thrashing inside
a gilded cage, or is it
a striped blanket pinning
me down against the yellow
diamonds of a fainting couch.
No matter. I flail,
rage, seen or unseen,
behind this map, one part
of my drawing, paralleled
to a meridian I never
said I’d stand behind.
But really, don’t worry,
I’m held, kept, contained.
One day I will burn
this whole thing down.

#countmein MOAH / ARTIST IN RESIDENCE A social engagement project organized by the Museum of Art & History
Every 10 years, the U.S. Census counts every resident in the nation. A complete and accurate count of California’s population is essential to the state. The Lancaster Museum of Art and History and the neighborhoods which immediately surround the Museum, historically, have had high Low Response Scores (LRS). Neighborhoods with Low Response Scores typically go undercounted and remain underrepresented and underfunded.
For the first time, the Census participation will be conducted primarily through online self-responses instead of hard copy mailing efforts. This change has the potential to drastically impact state and county funding. Many critical factors can be barriers to participation in the Census including education, race, languages spoken, poverty level, homelessness, immigration status and level of trust.
The Lancaster Museum of Art and History believes that change happens at the speed of trust. The Museum has found the best way to build trust between an organization and its community, breaking down these barriers, is by embedding artists who reflect the communities in which they live and work, who look the same and speak the same language. Through a series of workshops, community gatherings, candid photography, and a public exhibition, the artists-in-residence will increase the self-enumerated responses of these identified Low Response Score (LRS) neighborhoods in the 2020 Census.
This project is made possible with funding from the the California Arts Council and additional support from the Housing Corporation of America, MOAH Lancaster Museum & Public Art Foundation, The City of Lancaster and Artists in Residence.

FAULT LINES ARTIST IN RESIDENCY PROGRAM Curatorial advisor: Marisa Caichiolo
The Fault Line Artists-in-Residence Program is a platform that fosters creative and intellectual growth bringing together visual artists, scientists, architects, writers and curators who collectively explore a fascinating destination, the California Desert. Fault Line provides a shared experience for its participants to engage in myriad of environmental issues relevant to our time and to develop professionally through interdisciplinary collaborations, landscape interventions, critical analysis, reflections, open discussions, information exchange, interactive communication and engagement with community.
The program was primarily designed to host international artists, so I was incredibly honored to be invited to attend by curator Marisa Caichiolo to participate in the residency to further develop my newest body of work Somewhere Else. The residency program is a collaborative experience, and I was paired with Mexican artist Marco Miranda. We had an incredible experience, working both on our own projects, and making a collaborative video, which I hope to share soon.
Thank you for following my journey and for your interest in my work. If you fall in love with one of my images - I am honored!
