Pioneering north west London research data to enable cutting-edge research and innovation to benefit UK patients led by ICHP

Discover-NOW, a unique partnership led by Imperial College Health Partners (ICHP), will be the Health Data Research Hub for Real World Evidence in the UK. One of seven pioneering data hubs to be set up this October, it will enable cutting-edge research for health discoveries and will aim to give patients across the UK faster access to pioneering new treatments. Discover-NOW will bring together NHS organisations, globally recognised academic, commercial and charity partners as well as patients and the public to revolutionise the way health information is used to treat and prevent disease in the future. We will scale our already leading data eco-system working in partnership with technology and academic partners such as Google, IBM, NorthWest EHealth, Imperial College London and Medopad.

Suspicion of Sepsis Dashboard shortlisted for awards

We are proud to announce that our Suspicion of Sepsis (SOS) Insights Dashboard has been shortlisted for two HSJ awards; Driving efficiency through technology and Acute sector innovation of the year.

The SOS Dashboard enables NHS staff to improve patient care and reduces potential harm by – for the first time ever – providing consistent, accurate and reliable data on sepsis outcomes.

The Dashboard has huge potential to help reduce harm and already enables clinicians to track the impact of their interventions in order to deliver safer care. Winning this award will further enable our aspirations to build the adoption and spread of this work by developing the Dashboard to support clinicians to better recognise and diagnose Sepsis.

ICHP's Patient Safety Programme Director Kenny Ajayi said: "I am delighted that our continued hard work and collaborations have been recognised on such a prestigious platform. We are committed to delivering improved outcomes for our patients, and to be chosen among the other incredible nominees is a wonderful achievement."

Winners will be selected ahead of the 2019 HSJ awards ceremony, which is due to be held at the Battersea Evolution Centre, London Wednesday 6 November.

Improving patient safety for hospital referrals

Patients – and the doctors who treat them – in Hillingdon will soon benefit from a safer, more efficient system of referrals to hospital thanks to our jointly developed dashboard add-on launched this month.

The Advice and Guidance Dashboard, by ICHP and Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, is an add-on to the NHS e-referral (NHSeRS) system launched in 2014. It functions as a two-way tool, allowing GPs in the Hillingdon Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) to communicate online to consultants at the Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust’s two hospitals, at Hillingdon, and at Mount Vernon in Northwood.

The dashboard works by allowing GPs to log queries concerning a patient’s care. This is screened by managers at the Trust and allocated to the appropriate discipline. Consultants and other specialists then respond in a timely way with assistance for the enquirer. All patient data is anonymised before it leaves the GP practice, using a unique reference number instead.

Full, accurate referral information is important for improving patient care, just as inappropriate or unnecessary referral to hospital is a drain on resources, so the dashboard will also help to save money across the local healthcare budget.

Early warning system improving patient safety

ICHP has been working with Northwick Park Hospital's STARRS (Short-Term Assessment, Rehabilitation and Reablement) team to support them in increasing patient safety and their access to appropriate resources, by implementing NEWS2 (National Early Warning Score v2).

The scoring tool supports clinicians in the recognition and management of deterioration in unwell patients, allowing deteriorating patients to be better identified and given appropriate treatment. It also creates a common language amongst clinicians working in different settings, increasing consistency of treatment.

Since we began aiding with implementation in January, the STARRS team are now reporting that 95-99% of all patients are now having a NEWS2 score calculated.

Following this success the STARRS team are looking to roll out NEWS2 across Brent GP practices and nursing homes, meaning that clinicians will have an objective measure of a patient's clinical state across the system.

PINCER programme reducing medication-related harm in north west London

More than 960,000 patients in north west London are having their chances of medication-related harm reduced thanks to ICHP's work with pharmacists and GP practices on the national PINCER programme.

PINCER is a pharmacist-led IT intervention for reducing clinically important errors in general practice prescribing. Trials have shown that it reduces error rates by up to 50% following adoption.

ICHP has been rolling out PINCER across north west London, introducing it to GP practices and practice pharmacists and supporting PINCER training, since January this year. The latest figures, released this month, show that we have successfully engaged 120 GP practices, bringing them on to the first step of implementation, with 21 practices using it live.

PINCER is in QOF (Quality Outcomes Framework) and if you are part of a GP practice or are a pharmacist wanting to know more, please contact Innovation Advisor Hai Lin Leung for more information.

Value in public health - a system perspective

Traditionally in the NHS we’re used to thinking of value as value for money. However, there is now a drive to focus more on the wider determinants of value – care outcomes and user experience for example, set against the resources needed to deliver a service.

Andi Orlowski, Deputy Director of Business Intelligence, takes a look at how we measure value on a broader spectrum and how this can help us improve healthcare.

Engagement with Londoners must go deeper in order to realise the full benefits of joined-up health and care data

A new report suggests that system leaders must go further than before to fully understand the public’s expectations of how health and care data is used in a variety of real-world situations.

OneLondon Local Health and Care Record Exemplar (LHCRE) have published Understanding public expectations of the use of health and care data – an independent report authored by CurvedThinking and developed in consultation with Understanding Patient Data.

The report reveals that previous research and engagement has largely focused on the anticipated benefits or potential concerns around the use of health and care data; and it highlights that we know too little about the way that people weigh-up these respective benefits and concerns in real-world scenarios.
