The last turn of the Brass Knob

The antiques store in Adams Morgan, widely considered to be the last holdout of stores its kind, is closing after 38 years, signaling the end of an era. The store had a devoted community; sometimes patrons were looking for a $12,950 Victorian light fixture, other times they were just there for the friendship with owner Donetta George.

Scoop, there it is (wait, where?)

The new ice cream shop across from Howard on Georgia Ave opened, and Washingtonian asked its owner five questions, including why she chose Columbia Heights as the location.

  • This raises a new geo-question: Would you consider the strip of Georgia Ave between Columbia Road and Howard: Columbia Heights, or something else? Let us know here.

Matriculate at the Rat Academy

Somewhere deep in the filthy alleyways of Adams Morgan, steely-eyed cadets in the District’s Rat Academy are brushing up on their Sun Tzu and learning all about their rodent enemy. The D.C. Health Dept.’s two-day training attracts civil servants, property managers, and exterminators alike — all united in the beautiful dream of one day defeating the city’s out of control rat population.

All the butter chicken

A new restaurant gives the people what they want: trays and trays of butter chicken. Of the many complex dishes in the diverse pantheon of Indian cuisine, the humble butter chicken, a beautiful medley of tomato, spices, and a metric ton of heavy cream, still remains the reigning global champ.
