Bottled Water

Are you thirsty? Do you plan to bring your water with you when you leave the house? Or do you rely on the availability of bottled water and use that to stave of dehydration?

It seems that even with a wide variety of non-plastic water bottles available, many of us choose to got with the plastic. According to an article I read recently, the world goes through one million bottles of water per minute. That’s 1,000,000 bottles. Per minute! And sadly, in spite of all the don't-use-straws-no-plastic-bags-be-kind-to-the-environment media attention, we are still using massive numbers of plastic bottles. That number is currently anticipated to rise to 1.2 million bottles per MINUTE by 2021. Plus all that plastic is adding obesogenic hormone disrupting chemicals to our water.  We need to do better.

San Francisco airport (SFO) is doing their bit to help cut down on plastic pollution. If you think about it, this is a perfect opportunity. After all, you can't bring liquids through security. Many people don't bring a bottle and refill it, they simply purchase at one of the many convenience stores available in the airport. Now if you're traveling through SFO that won't be an option; they've just announced a ban on plastic bottled water sales. Before the ban SFO put in a lot of water filling stations. That's a great option. I always travel with my own water bottle and refill at the refilling stations (so much better than trying to squeeze the neck of the bottle into the water fountain which has probably been licked or mouthed by some small child with a cold). My only complaint is that the single-use bottle ban only applies to water. Soda, juice and flavored water are still sold in the traditional plastic bottles. I'm guessing lots of people who forget to bring a water bottle will probably wind up buying those instead. Or there will be a big uptick in sales of durable water bottles at the airport.

Outside of the airport it's still a good idea to bring your own water bottle. While carrying your own water bottle with you is always a good idea finding water isn’t always easy. But, as it turns out, there's an app for that. Tap Projects, Inc. has an app which can help you find the closest refill station (even if you are not at SFO).

If you're looking for a good water bottle to bring with you, I’m a fan of glasstic which encases the glass core in a shatterproof outer wrap. Use the code GLASSTIC10 at checkout for 10% off your order.
And as a general reminder, you probably need more water than you think you do. And if you're looking for an app to help you I personally use Daily Water which has an easy-to-use interface and has reminders. For android users you can check out these five free apps.

The Food and Agribusiness Merger Moratorium and Antitrust Review Act is a house bill that was originally introduced in September of 2018. It was not enacted into law. It is being revived in order to review large agribusiness concerns as well as those of food and business companies. It would also look at mergers in the grocery retail space. The bill is supposed to help farmers, farm workers, and consumers by placing boundaries on corporate interests in the food space. It will be interesting to see how this impacts federal subsidies and current agricultural methods which heavily favor monocropping (growing huge fields of just one crop) and farmers working for agribusiness concerns instead of directly with their consumer populations. I'll keep you posted as this unfolds.

Sweet and heat seem to be the newest flavor combination to make an appearance in the dairy case at the grocery store.  While chili and chocolate have been around for a while, these are new sweet-spicy items coming to market to meet consumer desire for more exotic flavors. These combinations are quite varied and include a butter with sugar, cinnamon, and hot peppers. There's also a yogurt with green apple, ginger, and candied jalapeno.  Don't forget to check the amount of sugar in these items as they do rely on higher levels of sweetness to cut some of the spice and provide flavor contrast.

Insects continue to be promoted as a nutritional powerhouse. Apparently at the latest Institute of Food Technologists annual meeting they were promoted as the “new superfood.”  One promoter suggested that they were good for those following a Paleo diet, a Keto diet, and vegetarians. While vegetarians are not vegans, I confess I don't anticipate many insecta-tarians (vegetarians willing to eat insects). Consumers in North America and Europe still seem to struggle with the idea of eating insects and promoters agree that it's a difficult move. They plan to focus on the nutritional values and supposed sustainability in order to try to grow the edible insect market. If you do decide to try eating bugs remember that how and where they're grown, plus what they're fed, are all important issues to keep in mind.

This is an interview that I did with Lara Adler who is The Environmental Toxins Expert. We covered so much ground focusing on BPA and it's impact on our health.
