Bottled Water
Are you thirsty? Do you plan to bring your water with you when you leave the house? Or do you rely on the availability of bottled water and use that to stave of dehydration?
It seems that even with a wide variety of non-plastic water bottles available, many of us choose to got with the plastic. According to an article I read recently, the world goes through one million bottles of water per minute. That’s 1,000,000 bottles. Per minute! And sadly, in spite of all the don't-use-straws-no-plastic-bags-be-kind-to-the-environment media attention, we are still using massive numbers of plastic bottles. That number is currently anticipated to rise to 1.2 million bottles per MINUTE by 2021. Plus all that plastic is adding obesogenic hormone disrupting chemicals to our water. We need to do better.
San Francisco airport (SFO) is doing their bit to help cut down on plastic pollution. If you think about it, this is a perfect opportunity. After all, you can't bring liquids through security. Many people don't bring a bottle and refill it, they simply purchase at one of the many convenience stores available in the airport. Now if you're traveling through SFO that won't be an option; they've just announced a ban on plastic bottled water sales. Before the ban SFO put in a lot of water filling stations. That's a great option. I always travel with my own water bottle and refill at the refilling stations (so much better than trying to squeeze the neck of the bottle into the water fountain which has probably been licked or mouthed by some small child with a cold). My only complaint is that the single-use bottle ban only applies to water. Soda, juice and flavored water are still sold in the traditional plastic bottles. I'm guessing lots of people who forget to bring a water bottle will probably wind up buying those instead. Or there will be a big uptick in sales of durable water bottles at the airport.
Outside of the airport it's still a good idea to bring your own water bottle. While carrying your own water bottle with you is always a good idea finding water isn’t always easy. But, as it turns out, there's an app for that. Tap Projects, Inc. has an app which can help you find the closest refill station (even if you are not at SFO).
If you're looking for a good water bottle to bring with you, I’m a fan of glasstic which encases the glass core in a shatterproof outer wrap. Use the code GLASSTIC10 at checkout for 10% off your order.
And as a general reminder, you probably need more water than you think you do. And if you're looking for an app to help you I personally use Daily Water which has an easy-to-use interface and has reminders. For android users you can check out these five free apps.
