Boronia West PS

Eastern Interclub. DUE THIS WEDNESDAY!
Entries are now due on August 14th but there can simply be no late entries at all as selection will take place on the 15th.

August Image Evaluation
 “Dusk to Dawn”.

The image should show subject matter taken after the sun has gone below the horizon and before the sun rises.
Not Sunset or Sunrise, Dawn to Dusk.

Portrait Group Sunday August 4th

Last Sunday portrait group had a very good studio photo shoot with a couple of models. Thanks everyone for helping set up and pack away.

Remember part of the deal is that everyone that came along (and took pictures) sends at least 2 images to Janette to pass onto the models. You can email them to her nettyand@iinet.net.au

(Same format as when sending in for a club image eval comp), or put them on a memory stick (with your name on it), and give to her, (she will give back the memory stick, probably).

If you don’t give her some images, we will send round the club enforcers.

Remember, we want good quality, well processed files.

KPS  MYSTERY TOUR – 28th July 2019
Photography and words by Kathleen Edens

Up bright and early on Sunday morning we met outside the Club Rooms in Boronia. Gary gave us details for the first destination for the day, the Studley Park Boathouse.  No one got lost although some of us took the scenic route through Kew.

Choices were made, some went for a long walk to Dights’ Falls, and some of us crossed Kanes’ Bridge and took photos of the parklands and then headed back to coffee at the Boathouse Cafe/Restaurant.   Kanes’ Bridge is a swing bridge and some members took great delight in making it move, creating havoc to some of us walking across. Who has a big grin on his face...!!   The sun was lovely and warm and the coffee excellent!

There was lots of ducks, large white ones, and native ducks, and some  must have been Wood Ducks as they were up in the trees, quite high. Rowing down the river was a popular event,   and lots of people were out  exercising their dogs, all shapes and breeds (the dogs! ).

A short distance drive to the Wurundjeri Spur Lookout gave us the opportunity of images of the city skyline.  We were also able to practice improving our freezing of the subject with a blurred background as bicycle riders were out  en masse, some of them weren’t happy with lots of cameras pointing in their direction as they puffed up the hill.  We had more luck with the downhill riders as far as blur was concerned.

Next destination was to Heide Museum of Modern Art and Restaurant for lunch.  Well,  everyone in Melbourne had the same idea, so Gary took us to the local shopping centre and we purchased food and drinks for a picnic in the grounds of Heidi Museum.

Our last destination was to Pound Bend, Warrandyte  to check out the tunnel, and walking tracks along the Yarra River, hopefully finding Koalas and various birds.  No luck on the Koalas,   they must have been hibernating.  After a long walk we were lucky to see a paddock of Kangaroos, looked like two males with their harem of lady Kangaroos with little Joeys in their pouch. One very obliging Kookaburra sat on the limb and watched us taking photos of him/her.

A big thank you Gary and Team for a wonderful day with great company, and enjoyable destinations, all places worthy of a return visit soon.

Cheers,
Kathleen Edens.

Print Run

KPS is doing a bulk print order to a Lab in NSW. You need to give your images to Martin on or before first meeting in August, ie. 14th August THIS WEDNESDAY!

Basically:

- only 2 print sizes 18x12" and 12 x18

- no borders - if you want one (highly recommended for mounting) then build it into your print file - suggest 0.5"

- for other than 3x2 (1.5:1 ) aspect ratios just centre the image on a template matching your paper size and cut off the excess white when you get the print back.

- no choice of paper, mat finish only for colour and b&w.

- set print resolution at 300 pixels per inch

- prefer- send files to Martin Rowe email f8125sec@gmail.com either via WeTransfer or Dropbox

- alternatively hand to Martin on USB or CD/DVD

- include your name in filename to help identify prints

Cost would be approx $2 for 8 x 12s and $3 for 12 x 18s . (2018 prices), maybe a bit more taking in shipping.

Desired resolution: 300 DPI or 3600 x 2400 pixels for the 12" x 8" and 5400 x 3600 for the 18" x 12". File naming: This is important. Please put your initials at the start of the filename!

The file size must not exceed 10Meg. If it does exceed 10Meg it will be resized to be meet the 10Meg limit set by the printers. All care but no responsibility. File sizing should be done before being given to Martin.

Talk with Martin or Gary for further info.

KPS – Knox Council Bio Diversity Project Update

KPS has started to collect images of parks and reserves within Knox in conjunction with Knox Council.

We hope that council will archive these images for future use but to make these images a useful resource for not only immediate use but for future generations, it is imperative that each image has a unique identifier and that each image also has information about the subject such as location and date.

Otherwise, the collection will just be a random collection of pictures of parks, somewhere in Knox.

Committee will give some thought about the best way to achieve useful image data given the variety of computer skill levels among our members.

In the interim, can members please select the images you wish to submit then rename them as follows:

Name of Bushland Reserve Image Number - Photographers Name
For example:

  • Mansons Reserve 1- Mary Smith
  • Mansons Reserve 2- Mary Smithr
  • Mansons Reserve 3- Mary Smith
Please make full size jpg files at about 80% in Lightroom and save into a folder called Mansons
Copy this folder to a USB stick then hand to either Rob or Ray.
Alternatively, transfer to Rob via WeTransfer.

Our naming system will allow a unique name for each file as well as showing the name of the reserve and the photographer for those users who don't utilise IPTC data.

Ideally, everyone should know how to apply IPTC data to their images using software such as Lightroom but sadly this is not the case.

If you are interested, Google 'adding IPTC in Lightroom' or similar.

Colour Munkis and any other KPS equipment.

Note: All equipment loans are for 1 week, from Wednesday to Wednesday.

If borrowed on the last Wednesday of the month return is the Sunday portrait workshop, or you need to drop by at the committee meeting, which is always the first Wednesday of the month.

Need help with something photographic?

Email Rob with what you need and the camera you are using and Rob will try to point you to someone that can help. secretary@knoxcameraclub.org

Details on the KPS website.
The KPS branded reusable Keep Cups are available again this year for our Member Only price of $5.00 (these are heavily subsidised by KPS as they would cost you about $16.00 each retail).

Order and pay online and collect at a meeting - please be sure to bring your receipt, which will be emailed to you.

Remember, if you want a cuppa after the meeting you need your own cup as we no longer supply disposable cups.

Details on the KPS website.
Mat Board (See above for buying via KPS above).

If you need Mat board to mount your images and want to go direct to our source, contact KPS member Les Finch at Finch Computers.

It is $10 a sheet (40 x 32 inches).

Les needs to sell a certain amount per year to continue to be able to obtain board at a wholesale level.

Croydon Camera House – make sure you tell them you are a KPS member, it is a good idea to ask for Nigel.
It's also a good idea to find your best price online from an Australian retailer then see if Croydon Camera House will price match.
