WHAT'S UP

Just two small quilts were the bulk of my creating since the last issue of The Scrap Basket, but I'm ok with that! Both were impulsive and freeing - the perfect kind of sewing for me. The results may not be large, but as far as joy in the process goes, total wins.

First was Oh Scrappy Day, 33" x 43", and made for Nicholas/@quiltsfromtheattic's
Inspiring Improv Instagram Tour. It was a fun way to use Nicholas' slab technique to sew straight from scraps.
Next was Black&White, my response to the Curated Quilts' Black & White Mini Quilt Challenge. As improvisational as Oh Scrappy Day, it was again a mix of solids and prints, and with a quilted spiral to finish it off, ended up at 15 1/1" square.

WORTH A READ

ROUND-UP

When I first saw Sophie/Luna Love QuiltsLove quilt, I overlooked one very important design detail! Not only does the center medallian say 'LOVE,' inspired by the work of Siddharth Mate, but for the background
Sophie "enlarged the same letters and placed them as they overlapped with each other." Isn't that something? [lunalovequilts]
(49.5 "x 69.5")
Daniela/Block M Quilts used her Define Gravity as a test for herself to see how far she could go with modernizing a traditional quilt block. Look close to see her quilting, straight lines using black and white thread in three different thicknesses, which often gives a sense of invisibility in certain sections. [blockmquilts]
(37" x 37")

This happy little pouch by
[stitchhappycompany] kind of blew me away. Darling yes, all around, but that ice cream fabric is actually three colorways pattern-matched! Pretty sweet, right?! AND ingenious!
(Pattern is the #seeitallpouch by
@aneelahoey, with fabric designed by @missmelodymiller
for @rubystarsociety.)
I watched as Kathy/[hbeecook] posted progress on her Kona Splash Challenge Quilt, and was so pleased to see her final piece! Here's another one where you need to zoom in to see the quilting, which Kathy took to a maximalist level, finishing it off with some hand-stitching.
Since I've made a
#sidewalkchalkquilt myself, I know the pattern by Then Came June intimately, and am always on the lookout for more. So when I saw Erica/[texheks] had made one, I went in for a closer look. She used one of her dad's shirts as a start off point for the color palette. Isn't that lovely and clever both? And then she did some machine-quilting and added some big-stitch hand-quilting as well. Love how Erica made it her own!
I felt fortunate to finally meet my Bee Sewcial mate, Silvia/[astrangerview] at QuiltCon this year, and she's just a cutie. She's also a wonderfully creative maker, and I was so impressed to see her patchwork dress, one of many she plans to make from her scraps. Silvia says, "Maybe my clothes will all look very similar but at least they will all carry the story of my making." Precious.
Anyone that knows Stefanie/
[satterwhitequilts] knows she loves a half-square triangle (SEE?), so it was a fun surprise to see her creating something else for a change. Her version of the Rainbow Falls Quilt is darling, no? But look at those stripes(!), and how she finished it off with a very unique binding - mitered AND curves! wow.

A GLANCE BACK

Most makers I know have at least a couple, if not multiple, ways they create. Though quilts are my major focus, I also really enjoy making smaller items and trying new techniques and substrates. Which is why I went and dabbled in using waxed canvas a while back. I gathered all sorts of tips, originally shared as a guest post at Diary of a Quilter, and it's now shared at A Quilter's Table just in case you'd like to give it a go too!

GOTTA LOVE IT!

When I stopped for a closer look at Audrey/[cottonandbourbon]'s "Zesty Delta", I was delighted to be reminded that Audrey and I had been in the same Improv Theme and Variation class with Denyse Schmidt at QuiltCon last February. That was where I began my Home Away from Home quilt, and obviously we both were inspired by that day of creating. For her piece, Audrey tried grid-quilting for the first time; and personally, in addition to the beautiful variety of greens she used, I love her use of contrasting purple and red bits. Truth be told, I find her creation completely captivating.

P.S. Even if you didn't enter the Curated Quilts Black & White Mini Quilt Challenge, you really should check out the entries! You'll find them as impressive as ever! (The deadline for submissions is August 31, 2019, so actually, there's still time to enter in!)
