August Update: Lean In Malaysia Sabah

Lean In Malaysia Sabah met up on August 3rd for its fifth circle meeting. Circle member, Anna Iwankowska, led the meeting on work-life balance, where the team shared ideas by adopting time chart to assess their time management towards a more balanced distinction between professional and personal life.

The chart had columns marked 1) work, 2) time for yourself, and 3) relationships, with 12 waking hours divided between each column. The team agreed that most time spent at work involved activities like checking emails and responding to calls; and noticed how hard and difficult it was to unwind, a crucial component to maintain mental sanity. "Almost 70% of wake time, we spend at work, and then at home, we spend so little time with our family, friends or just with ourselves. To improve work-life balance, we must give up on perfectionism," said Anna.

Throughout the discussion, it was apparent that everyone wanted to be perfect in everything, which affected our time and mood — when our high expectations were beyond reach. The solution was to involve the family in daily chores to help out and make things together and better.

A little throwback to July's updates...

An impromptu birthday celebration for Maria

Michelle de la Harpe-Germani led the 4th circle meeting on Stacy Brown-Philpot's "Authentic Leadership" on July 13th at Regus Suria Sabah, their official sponsored venue.

Stacy, the CEO of TaskRabbit, shared her Lean In experience by saying, "never be afraid to ask for what you need to make your whole life - not just your work life - work for you," to encourage members to think about the importance of bringing their whole selves to their careers and how to go about it.

From there, the members did a quick check on each other's accomplishments since the last meeting and set aside a 'one-action' plan to be accomplished prior to the next circle meeting. They then shared their responses and experiences based on the video watched earlier and brainstormed ideas to cover topics on what they would like their coworkers to know and what men should know.
Sponsor Highlight: EcoWorld Innovation Challenge 2019
Nerves were high and tension was palpable at Eco Grandeur, during the final round of the EcoWorld Innovation Challenge 1.0!

It had been a long journey of blood, sweat, and tears as 23 teams brainstormed innovative ideas to pitch to the judges, hoping to be the next movers and shakers of the industry with ground-breaking new products and strategies.

From 23 teams, 12 teams survived the first cut and refined their ideas to pitch once more at Eco Sanctuary, gaining valuable feedback from an experienced panel comprising of President & CEO Dato’ Chang Khim Wah, Executive Director Liew Tian Xiong, and Divisional General Manager of Group Quality Management Steven Su.

It was a tough call for the panel to decide on the finalists, but alas, it was survival of the fittest and 5 teams made it through: Eco Intervia, The Secret Squad, Team Macallan 21, Team EcoWorld UK, and Team Sax!

It was a tense finale, but the Challenge still brought the best out of all participants! They delivered stellar presentations and wowed the panel, this time led by Chairman Tan Sri Liew, with their cutting-edge ideas.

It was a great learning experience for the audience too, and in a refreshing twist, audience had the opportunity to have their voices heard, by voting for their favourite ideas via a live online poll.

Finally, after the teams completed their presentations and the panel deliberated... Congratulations to Team Eco Intervia for winning the Commercial category and Team Sax for bagging top spot in the Residential category!

All finalists were awarded lucrative prizes, but the best is yet to come... Stay tuned for Innovation Challenge 2.0!
