Professional and Career Development Opportunities

For many postdocs, switching career after many years in the lab is not easy. But postdocs do have a tremendous amount of experience and potential to move into a Medical Science Liaison (MSL) role in the biotech and pharmaceutical industry. As an MSL one will be using a lot of the scientific knowledge gained as a postdoc, liaising and discussing the latest clinical data and clinical studies with top clinicians to help bring innovative pipeline drugs to the market. And no, it is not a sales job, it is all about the (clinical) science.

This transition to an MSL job can be challenging and we have therefore created a free MSL webinar on the 16th-19th of August for postdocs to explore if this is the right career for them. Free sign up here.

After signing up for the webinar, have a look at some of the stories from previous postdocs who are now MSLs: www.fromSCIENCEtoPHARMA.com/#Testimonials

Course Design Retreat

Spend the day with colleagues and TLTC staff to learn about evidence-based teaching practices and apply them to your own course design. We will engage in the process of backward design by writing effective learning outcomes, planning equitable assessments, and exploring ideas for student engagement. Other topics include syllabus construction, using ELMS to support student learning, creating a more inclusive classroom climate, and attending to issues of academic integrity. If you have a course that you're designing, redesigning, or just thinking about creating, bring your materials to work on and get helpful feedback. Lunch will be provided. Register here.

Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning

UMD-CIRTL [Center for the Integration of Research Teaching and Learning] is an important resource funded by the Graduate School, open to all UM graduate students, postdocs, and faculty. UMD-CIRTL is part of a national network of nearly 40 universities whose mission is to improve higher education by providing community and resources for the professional development of future academics. UMD-CIRTL’s philosophy is that teaching, like research, is a scholarly activity built on three principles; Teaching-as-Research (TAR): using research to inform teaching and teaching to advance research, Learning Communities: bringing people together for shared learning, discovery, and generation of knowledge, and Learning-Through-Diversity: capitalizing on the rich array of experiences, backgrounds, and skills among students and faculty to enhance the learning of all. UMD-CIRTL works closely with, PROMISE: Maryland’s Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP) grant to increase the number of minority students receiving doctoral degrees and entering the STEM professoriate.

For more information, follow this link or contact the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs or go to the CIRTL Network and register. This will give you free access to professional development courses, seminars and workshop as well as a listing of current employment opportunities.
