Call for Changes to West Coast Fishery Licences
Fisheries in BC are getting a lot of attention lately, and the Strathcona Food Security Hub are bringing attention to the recent House of Commons Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans (FOPO) report: “West Coast Fisheries: Sharing the Risks and Benefits.” The report documents many issues with the current licensing of our commercial fisheries resources, and the knock-on impacts to fish harvesters, First Nations, and local fishing communities.

The FOPO report contains multiple recommendations to try to ameliorate the unintended socio-economic consequences of DFO licensing policy in BC. Now is a crucial time to advocate for the recommendations to be adopted. The Strathcona Food Security Hub is asking for communities and organisations to write to the Honourable Jonathon Wilkinson, Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard at min@dfo-mpo.gc.ca to support the recommendations in the FOPO report.

Strathcona background: In 2017, in partnership with Greenways Land Trust, Plan H and the Health Network, the Strathcona Food Security Hub completed the Boat to Table report on access to local seafood in Strathcona Communities. One of the main findings of this report was that the current licence regulations were one of the major contributors to local communities not having access to fresh seafood.
