The game with no rules
The other day I was talking to a prospective business buyer who is in the midst of negotiating for a business.
He wanted my advice on ways to make a counteroffer but didn’t want to offend the seller.
“I’m afraid if I push too hard, he’ll walk away from the negotiation and I really want this business.”
So what?
Many people come into a negotiation with the idea that it is a game with rules.
If someone stops playing, then the game is over.
Not so.
Two private parties can do whatever they want.
You’re not bidding on government surplus here.
If you push too hard and negotiations break down, they can restart later if the parties want.
What is important is that you don’t negotiate against yourself.
“I can’t offer that, he’d never go for it. I need to offer more.” Says the scared buyer.
No.
If the seller wants more, they’ll tell you. Let them negotiate for themselves.
You need to try and get the deal that works for you.
