The Downtown Programme will create a generous and welcoming destination along the water’s edge that is recognisably Tāmaki Makaurau.

This is one of Auckland’s biggest projects. By 2021, downtown will look dramatically different – a vibrant, transformed environment for all to enjoy.

Happy Friday from the Downtown Team!

We are happy to announce that another milestone was achieved this week!
This milestone being the commencement of piling works from Queen's Wharf to construct the new breakwater wall. Despite this wet and windy weather, construction of the Quay Street Enhancement raingardens continue in full swing, and our Queen's to Marsden (Q2M) seawall team have now completed two of the new Palisade Wall piles.

As always, look out for our pick of the week at the end of this newsletter. Happy reading!

What's happening?
  • Streetscape enhancement work along the southern (city) side of Quay Street until early 2020.
  • Piling works underway along the western side of Queens Wharf until early 2020.
  • Maintenance works under Pier 2 until mid to late-Aug 2019.
  • Seawall piling works underway along the northern (harbour) side of Quay Street (between Queens Wharf and Marsden Wharf) until early 2020.

Access to businesses and properties will be maintained at all times.

Important changes
Air vac machines will return to streetscape works along southern side of Quay Street next week. Depending on what underground services are found, they could be in operation for up to two weeks. We apologise for any disruption experienced.

Access to the temporary Quay Street bus stop 1346 outside MSocial Hotel is from the western side only.

Quay Street Enhancement

The above two raingardens are located in front of the PWC Building. The first raingarden is in the process of being boxed up and prepared for a concrete pour around its edges (as seen in the second photo). The concrete constrains the tree roots to keep them from spreading, and also assists in supporting the new road surfaces.

From next week there will be air vac machines returning to each streetscape area along the southern side of Quay Street. A new trench needs to be constructed that will home upgraded utility services (such as comms, power, stormwater and gas). Depending on how many existing services are located under the road, the air vacs may be on site for up to two weeks. We apologise should any disruption be experienced, and thank you for your continued patience.

Strengthening Quay Street's seawall

Queens Wharf to Marsden Wharf (Q2M)

Construction of the new Palisade Wall is now underway between Queens Wharf and Marsden Wharf. This piled wall will reinforce the existing 100 year old seawall that runs along Quay Street.

Using the 100 tonne piling rig and crane pictured above, our seawall piling team has already completed two piles and will start drilling for the third tomorrow. These completed piles are 15m long and 1.2m in diameter, so no small feat!

On the western end of Quay Street, the piling methodology used will be Jet Grouting. The outcome will be the same at all locations - safeguarding Auckland’s waterfront for the next 100 years.

Ferry Basin Redevelopment

Piling works from Queen’s Wharf to construct the new breakwater wall and canopy is now underway as part of the Ferry Basin Redevelopment project. Piles are vibro driven in to the sea bed using a 100T crane, then a pile hammer is used to ensure each pile has been driven in correctly (photo above - bottom right).  This may cause some noise disruption and we do apologise if this impacts you in any way.

Early next week the jack up barge will arrive on site. Piling for the new pontoons will commence from the barge shortly after.
