I was delighted to visit Urban Circle’s Summer Fest at Tredegar House last Friday.

The festival was devised and organised by young people aged 13 – 25 as part of Urban Circle’s U-Turn project, which is funded by my office. The project uses the creative arts to tackle social problems affecting young people in and around the Pillgwently area of Newport.

It was a fantastic event with a diverse line-up of music acts that brought young people together from across the city, breaking down barriers and helping to build a more cohesive community.

The young people on the event team gained stewarding and first aid qualifications, and about half of them also completed safeguarding and youth work accreditations. This enabled them to be paid a wage to work the event and will help them in the future when they are applying for jobs.

It has given young people the opportunity to channel their energy into something positive for their community and steer them away from potentially being involved in crime and anti-social behaviour.

I am delighted to be able to support the U-Turn Project for another year through my Community Fund and look forward to hearing about their next event.

Chief Constable appointment

The Gwent Police and Crime Panel will meet on Monday and will be reviewing my recommendation to appoint Temporary Chief Constable Pam Kelly as the new Chief Constable of Gwent Police.

If the panel agrees the recommendation then Ms Kelly will take over the role of Chief Constable.

Alway community safety event

My team attended the Alway Community Safety event last Friday.

The event provided members of the Alway community the opportunity to meet with community safety services.

It was also a great opportunity for my office and the local Gwent Police team to engage with young people, including a quick FIFA challenge on their new games console. Thank you to everyone who came along to say hello.

Youth project delivers self-defence classes to young people

I was pleased to see two OPCC funded projects working together to deliver activities for young people in the Duffryn area of Newport.

The Duffryn Community Link provides support and diversionary activities for young people and has teamed up with Heads of the Valleys Tang Do So, based in Ebbw Vale, to offer a series of self-defence classes. The classes are helping young people to build confidence, while channelling their energy into positive physical activity.

It is fantastic to see these two projects working together for the benefit of the community.
