Hello Everyone!
With cards flying, closing out the Biennium paperwork was like a scene from "Alice in Wonderland"… Kudos to Robin Bosch and the NDCA staff! And thanks to all of our grantees for your patience, as we send out requests for final reports amidst new grant award letters.
I am happy to report that very little money was returned to the State. This means we are on track with our budgeting, and working hard to make sure as much funds as possible get out to our grantees.
NOW WOULD BE A GOOD TIME to announce your FY20 grant award to your local press outlet. Include a photo showing the important work you do in your community. And, send a personal note to your Legislator saying thank you. As you prepare for your annual seasons or upcoming performances and shows, keep in mind that the NDCA board will make an effort to attend – if you invite them! The same is true for our Legislators.
We’ve made some adjustments to the Special Projects category. This grant program is really for NDCA to respond to opportunities quickly, not ongoing operational support… We’ve capped the number of application cycles to three years, trying new approaches each year to presenting work in the community. After that, it’s on to Community Arts Access, which can offer a bit more financial support.
We are thrilled to share three recent features created through our partnership with Prairie Public – Enjoy! “Narrative Geometry: The Art of Warli,” part of our Art for Life program; “Donna Cristy: Impressionist Painter,” which highlights one of the artists featured in the Capitol Exhibition program; and a profile of Scandinavian Folk Artist Pieper Fleck Bloomquist.
The Main Street 2019 Awards will be presented at the Summit October 29-30. This is the first year that there is a category for Arts and Culture! Please nominate some special people and projects that really highlight the best of North Dakota! (Link below!) And DO think about attending, as NDCA is participating with several sessions focused on regional public art!

NDCA announces new Board appointments
NDCA announces the addition of Megan Laudenschlager of Minot, and Kent Kapplinger of Fargo, to its board of directors. They were both recently appointed by Governor Burgum to serve on NDCA’s board, effective August 2019. NDCA welcomes Megan and Kent and gives a sincere thank you to our departing members, Terry Jelsing and Brad Bachmeier, for their time and efforts during their appointed terms. Fort Ransom to host artist Linda Roesch; and Fort Stevens to host artist Karen Bakke
The Artist in Residency Program is a partnership between the ND Parks & Recreation Department and NDCA where artists are selected via a panel process to spend one week in a North Dakota State Park. There were 19 applicants this year!

Registration now open for the 2019 Main Street ND Summit
The 2019 Main Street ND Summit will be held October 29-31 at the Bismarck Event Center. The Main Street Initiative strengthens and celebrates local efforts to build healthy, vibrant communities with smart infrastructure, and to attract and retain workforce. The Summit is a valuable time to network with community leaders from around the state and discuss issues like transportation, outdoor recreation, healthcare, education and quality of life. This year includes a special culture component and creative artists are participating on panels as well as in a Main Street Marketplace. Strengthen ND’s ONLINE Nonprofit Certificate Program
Registration is now open for Strengthen ND’s ONLINE Nonprofit Certificate Program, which is hosted in partnership with Minot State University. Limited to 15 participants annually, the Nonprofit Certificate Program is meant to serve as a learning opportunity for nonprofit professionals, board members, and volunteers. The Program will meet monthly for six months beginning October 2019. The cost to attend is $300 per person (includes materials). North Dakota Art Gallery Association Annual Conference and Retreat
The North Dakota Art Gallery Association is holding its Annual Conference and Retreat in Dickinson, North Dakota from September 8-10, 2019. Attendees will participate in training, painting, and ceramic workshops with guests including Greg Vettel, Director of the Northwest Arts Center; Nancy Walter, retired Director of the Taube Museum of Art; Kim Konikow, Director of the North Dakota Council of the Arts; and Robin Reynolds, owner of Dacotah Clay Works. As part of the Annual Conference, participating Galleries and Museums will also take part in the booking conference where artists are selected for touring exhibitions. Gov. Doug Burgum and the North Dakota Tourism Division, in partnership with AAA of North Dakota and North Dakota Council on the Arts, are kicking off the 2019 Governor’s Photo Contest. CBS This Morning’s “American Wonders” featured North Dakota's "Enchanted Highway"
The movie "Field of Dreams" gave 70-year-old Gary Greff the idea to turn a proverbial road to nowhere into a tourist attraction. Regent, North Dakota, has lost around 40 percent of its population since 1990. So Greff, a self-taught scrap metal sculptor, decided to give travelers something to see, to keep his town on the map. Mary Anne Carter confirmed as National Endowment for the Arts Chairman
On August 1 the United States Senate voted today to confirm Mary Anne Carter as chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts. Carter had served as acting chairman of the agency since June 5, 2018 and becomes the Arts Endowment’s 12th chairman since its inception in 1965. “I look forward to continuing to lead a talented and dedicated staff of professionals in our important work of ensuring that every American – in every community and in every neighborhood – has access to the arts,” said Mary Anne Carter. Artists and Other Cultural Workers: A Statistical Portrait
Artists and Other Cultural Workers: A Statistical Portrait is a new report from the National Endowment for the Arts describing the labor force of artists and cultural workers. The report analyzes six federal data sets—primarily from the U.S. Census Bureau and the Bureau of Labor Statistics—to create a profile of 11 artist occupations and cultural occupations, such as librarians, editors, curators, theatrical makeup artists and sound engineering technicians. It covers employment and income trends, work-force demographics, and employment projections for creative occupations, among other things.

Americans for the Arts unveils arts and military documentary
The 12-minute documentary titled CAMMO: Healing Through Song shows how the arts can strengthen the well-being of service members, veterans, and their families. Americans for the Arts has a history of arts and military collaborations—its National Initiative for Arts & Health in the Military works across the military, government, and arts sectors to advance the arts in healthcare, healing, and well-being for military service members, veterans, their families, and caregivers.
