Should You Use Social Media To Share Your Designs?

The hype around Social Media and the pressure to constantly create content can at times be overwhelming. Will posting on Instagram help you land clients? What if your design projects constitute different styles, making it difficult to establish a coherent brand? Who are you trying to reach when you post and are they seeing your work? Is it even worth your time at all?

Think of social media as simply another vehicle - another option - to promote your design work. When you need to get from point A to point B, you could take the bus, the train, your own car, ride your bike, walk, (maybe a boat?). In this case point A is your design work and point B is proving you have the design skills. The good news is that there are multiple right answers here. Maybe all you need is to build up an inventory of projects and upload them to your portfolio website, and that will be enough to showcase your expertise to a client. If your goal is connect with other designers who inspire you then developing your presence on social media may be the best vehicle.

The Futur recently did a great video where they interviewed designers who are asking these questions. One of the guests, Megan, discusses how she's considering taking a break from Social Media because it makes sense for her solo design business. They also discuss that if you decide you do want to build your brand on social media, then follow designers who inspire you and look at attributes that you might be able to adopt.

At the end of the day, social media is another avenue to get your work seen. There's the real, design-creating part, and the self-promotional part. How you get from point A to point B is up to you.

.DESIGN SITE SPOTLIGHT

This week's .design Site Spotlight goes to...

thehistoryofweb.design

thehistoryofweb.design definitely has become one of our favorite .design sites this year. The creativity and originality of this site are worth examining. First off, it doesn't look like most standard websites that have different pages; instead thehistoryofweb.design flows more like a story as you scroll down and click on new chapters. The pleasant, cloud-like 3D elements in the background make for great visual context. And the content is incredibly engaging. Did you know, for example that using flash on websites was so popular in 2004 that people could leave their job to become "flashers"? And how in 2011, Steve Jobs wrote one letter about Flash saying how it was obsolete, and overnight the technology died? There's tons to learn here, both from a website design perspective and from a historical perspective.

Have a .design site you'd like to nominate? Let us know and we might feature it in the next .design digest.

Design Tools Are Holding Us Back

Designer Tom Johnson makes a compelling case for why paying too much attention to the bells and whistles of software updates can actually distract us from spending time thinking about how to turn your designs into final products.

Defining Design Generalists

Molly Nix explains how being a design generalist isn't necessarily a bad thing. In fact, design generalists are system thinkers. They think of ways to build systems and processes to help improve efficiency and productivity.
