Ballard Multimodal Corridor

8/9/19 – Ballard Multimodal Corridor Construction Update

This week, crews closed the north half of the intersection at 28th Ave NW and NW Market St and began demolition and preparation work for paving. This work will continue through next week and requires traffic restrictions. To access local businesses on 28th Ave NW north of NW Market St, please follow the detour from NW Market St to 30th or 24th avenues NW, and enter 28th Ave NW from the north. Paving will be completed next week and the intersection should reopen the weekend of August 17th.

Curb preparation work will continue into next week along the north side of Market St, with a pour scheduled for Wednesday, August 14.

Crews finished pouring the sidewalk on NW 54th St this week, and road striping is tentatively planned for next week.
Upcoming work

Work on the north half of the intersection at 28th Ave NW and NW Market St is planned to continue through Friday, August 16. Concrete roadway pours are scheduled for today, August 9, and next week on Tuesday, August 13 and Thursday, August 15. This work requires lane restrictions and closure of the north half of the intersection, including this upcoming weekend. During this intersection work, vehicles accessing 28th Ave NW between NW Market St and NW 56th should follow the detour along NW 56th between 30th Ave NW and 24th Ave NW. The map below reflects these changes to traffic flow.

The King County Metro transit pole installation scheduled for this weekend has been postponed. We will provide updates to the schedule for pole installation as they become available. For more information, contact them directly.

On Monday, August 12, crews will begin excavation for pole foundations west of 24th Ave NW.  Pouring for foundation bases will follow the excavation work and begin on Tuesday, August 13. This work is expected to continue for two weeks and may cause intermittent interruptions to driveway access for businesses along NW Market St.

As early as Monday, August 19, crews will begin paving the north half of the intersection at 24th Ave NW and NW Market St. We expect the north half of the intersection to be closed for up to two weeks to allow crews to complete this work. In order to maintain eastbound traffic flow during the closure, the left turn will be temporarily eliminated for westbound traffic traveling from NW Market St onto Shilshole Ave NW. We’ll share more information about the closure and related traffic changes as it becomes available.

Upcoming work will require crews to work on sections of the sidewalk, and there will be an increase in pedestrian impacts as result. Please follow pedestrian detour signage placed along the project corridor.

As work continues along the project corridor and limits space for cyclists on the road, please remember to share the sidewalk and be aware of your surroundings.

What to expect during construction
  • Typical work hours from 7 AM to 10 PM, Monday through Saturday
  • Crews may work some nights and weekends to minimize impacts to traffic during weekday commute times
  • On-street parking and lane restrictions near work locations
  • Temporary sidewalk and crosswalk closures with signed detours
  • Noise, dust, concrete odors, and vibration
  • Access to businesses and residences will remain open, driveway restrictions will apply
  • Work is weather dependent, so timing of work may change if needed
Stay connected Thanks for your patience and support while we complete this project. We’re working to minimize construction impacts as much as possible.

Other Nearby Projects

West of the Ballard Multimodal construction zone, the Burke-Gilman Trail will be detoured near the 5500 block of Seaview Ave NW in Ballard beginning Monday, July 22. The Pump Station 43 Force Main Replacement project will detour the trail to Seaview Ave NW for 100 to 150 feet. This detour will be in place for three months. Lanes on Seaview Ave NW will be narrowed to accommodate both the trail detour and two-way vehicle traffic.

In summer of 2020, we will be paving NW Market St between 24th Ave NW and 15th Ave NW. This project includes sidewalk repairs, curb ramp upgrades, water main replacements, and stormwater drainage improvements. To find out more, and to sign up for project emails, visit our NW Market St webpage.
