Details are below - but we have an intersting author event to open up our Annual Meeting on Tuesday September 10th, we hope you will join us!  We are also tightening up our email and voice mail after realizing we had been missing out on communication for most of the year - very sorry to anyone who reached out and didn't get a reply!  And please share your thoughts on two recent questions from our inbox.

Author Reading - Still  (followed by our Annual Meeting)
Tuesday September 10, 2019
6:30pm - 7:30pm
SLP Rec Center Gallery Room
3700 Monterrey Drive
Event is free to attend, and dessert will be provided

Still is a nonfiction biography/memoir written by longtime St. Louis Park residents Rebecca Bender and her father Kenneth Bender.  It is a history of five generations, a family we meet first as they flee Odessa and last as they make their way as American Jews … and as Dakota farmers, as students and storekeepers, as soldiers and lawyers, and even as a teen in an international competition who stands face-to-face with Netanyahu.  Still was published by North Dakota State University (NDSU) Press and recently was named the Winner of the 2019 Independent Press Award (Judaism category).  Rebecca will read exerpts from her book and take questions.  Books will be available for sale and Rebecca will be signing books following the event.

Annual Meeting
Tuesday September 10, 2019
7:30 - 8:30pm
SLP Rec Center Gallery Room

Following the event, we will have our Annual Meeting which is open to anyone interested in staying!  The Annual Meeting will cover highlights from this past year, our membership and financial update, and key initiatives for the next year - including an update on our new book to be published at the end of the year!

Administrative Update

If you have sent us an email or left a voice mail this year and did not get a response, we are very sorry!  We discovered a glitch in our system and were not seeing messages properly.  For email we will be shifting over to our gmail account which is monitored more closely.  And for those who prefer to call us, know that our phone does not actually ring - we only use it to take voice messages.  Voice messages are checked weekly, so if you want a quicker reply please send us an email at slphistory@gmail.com.
As you know, we are a purely volunteer organization, and have only a handful of volunteers, so we are not able to staff an office or dedicate time every day to administrative duties.  We do our best, but it is why you will hear about our need for a part time Executive Director at the annual meeting.
Apologies to anyone who has felt ignored after sending us a message, we will be better going forward!

We got an interesting question this week, does anyone know why Reiss' restaurant featured a knight's helmet and swords on it?  Our article on it does not mention anything, so please Email us with your theories!

Another interesting question came through, this from Benilde-St. Margaret's School.  They are preparing materials for a unit on St. Louis Park history.  They are interested in any information specific to the land upon which the school is built.  We are gathering what we know, mostly from our website and recent research Bill has been doing for our upcoming book, but if you have other information or memories of that specific area - before or after the school was built - please share them with us in an email.  We will pass everything along to the school.
