Landscape Design Commissioned for Glascairn Open Space

We’re delighted to announce that Inverness based firm Horner and Maclennan have been appointed by CCT to prepare a final landscape design for the community open space at Glascairn. This work will build on the designs for a ‘village green’ drawn up by Tulloch Homes for the purposes of their planning consent. Our aim is that the open space will be a green and beautiful place where people can gather, socialise, play, work together, learn and relax.

Horner and Maclennan will be starting work in early September drawing on ideas put forward by many of you during the community consultation that took place at the end of 2018.  We have also asked them to undertake a further open consultation with the community as part of their brief. We will announce the date for that shortly and hope that lots of our members will come along and see their ideas and give feedback.

History Group – August update
The History Group would be very interested in receiving any information regarding the photograph of Culbokie School pupils (above) that has been made public by Sally Falconer. When we have a date for the photograph we will place it in date sequence on the page of “Culbokie School – group photos” http://www.culbokiect.org/index.asp?pageid=694579. There are a considerable number of gaps in our knowledge of the names of pupils over the years as you will see from the question marks – can you help? Suggestions to history@culbokiect.org

A CCT event to look forward to when the darker evenings arrive.

Lister-Kaye has many tales to tell as anyone who has read his books can testify.  Be sure to book your place and come along to what promises to be a fascinating evening.

Culbokie’s Active  Travel Route

We had some great news a few weeks ago, that we’ve been itching to share  – but we were sworn to secrecy. Now we’re delighted to be able to spill the beans – we’ve been awarded funding to develop plans for a better walking/ cycling route through the village. The aim is to make it easier and safer for pedestrians, cyclists and wheelchairs users to get to the main village facilities – the playpark, football ground, Findon Hall, church and school at one end and the shop, pub, and of course the planned Glascairn Hub at the other end. We also want to help cyclists get to the A9 at Duncanston, where they can access more frequent buses  ( a “ride and ride” scheme!). The funding comes from Transport Scotland via the Sustrans “Places for Everyone” scheme – designed to encourage people to leave their cars behind for short, local journeys, with benefits for health, road safety and the environment.

Our first job is to appoint consultants to help with an initial option appraisal, including consultation with local residents. That will lead to a preferred design for the route, which will then be developed to take account of technical issues like road safety, drainage and utilities. We expect to complete this phase of the work by May 2020, and then we’ll need to raise the money to put it into practice – but assuming we come up with a workable design, we expect to be granted 50% of the construction cost by Sustrans. At the same time as developing the initial designs, we’ll also be organising some gentle cycle-related events to give a bit more incentive to those who’d like to get on their bikes, but somehow never get round to it.

Although consultants will be guiding this work and doing the technical bits themselves, it would be really helpful to enlist a few local residents to help with some of the events, and with survey work to establish a “base-level” of how people travel around the village at present. Anyone who would be interested in helping with this, contact Martin Sherring, martin@pennyandmartin.co.uk/01349 877822.
