The Daily Caller: College To Pay Students For Violating Their Free Speech

Conservative students scored a victory yesterday when the University of Florida agreed to settle a lawsuit over viewpoint discrimination. The Young Americans for Freedom chapter at the University of Florida filed a federal lawsuit last December, claiming the school violated its First and 14th amendment rights because the school did not allow the group to receive student activity funds. The funds—obtained through mandatory student fees—were not being distributed in a viewpoint-neutral manner, which allowed the University to subsidize groups holding views it favored while denying funds to the conservative YAF group. As part of the settlement, the University of Florida eliminated its discriminatory policy and agreed to pay YAF $66,000.

Catholic News Agency: What the Philadelphia foster care case could mean for the Supreme Court
|
|

When the U.S. Supreme Court decided Obergefell v. Hodges in 2015, the majority attempted to explain that the decision would not harm millions of men and women who believe marriage is between one man and one woman. Yet it was not long before it became obvious that was not to be the case. Catholic Social Services of Philadelphia has asked the Court to uphold its freedom to operate according to its beliefs after—without receiving a complaint—the city of Philadelphia targeted the faith-based foster care group. As Michelle La Rosa writes at Catholic News Agency, should the Court side with CSS, it could answer key questions left open by Obergefell.

As the University of California Santa Barbara investigates a graduate student for her outspoken criticism of transgender ideology, 12 academic philosophers from around the world have signed on to a letter in support of open debate—even when it's unpopular. The group, which includes controversial Princeton ethicist Peter Singer, asserts philosophy’s central role in a culture’s search for truth, condemning the labeling of dissenting ideas as "hate speech." The group also condemns what they call the "too frequently cruel and abusive rhetoric" that is used in an attempt to silence unpopular voices.

The Federalist: Putting Abortion Pill Vending Machines On California State Campuses Is A Horrific Idea

A California bill that would put an abortion pill dispenser student health centers is rife with problems, writes Bernadette Tasy. Bernadette—whose pro-life involvement was illegally censored by a professor at Fresno State University—recently testified before a California state assembly committee, where she laid out three major problems with the bill. The bill is both unnecessary and forces even pro-life students to pay for abortions through an increase in student fees. Most egregiously, Bernadette pointed out to the committee, is the undeniable moral problem that abortions such as these end an innocent human life. Writing at The Federalist, Bernadette goes on to explain that the bill is so poorly designed that even some abortion advocates have opposed it.
